Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of right-handed pitcher Kyle Bellamy and left-handed pitcher Kyle Anderson to contracts for the 2014 season. Bellamy, 26, missed all of last season recovering from Tommy John surgery. He last pitched in 2012 in the Chicago White Sox organization, splitting time between Class A Advanced Winston-Salem of the Carolina League and Class AA Birmingham of the Southern League. He had no record, a 1.65 ERA and four saves in 18 appearances out of the bullpen with Winston-Salem. In 16 relief appearances with Birmingham, he went 1-2 with a 4.68 ERA. “Were going to give him the opportunity to pitch the ninth inning for us,” Forney said. “He had a lot of success with the White Sox organization. Unfortunately, hes had a couple seasons where hes missed significant time because of injury that has somewhat derailed his professional career. Were excited to have him. Hes a sidearm pitcher with a lot of deception in his delivery. We think he can be the perfect fit for us at the back of the bullpen.” Bellamy was selected by the White Sox in the fifth round of the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft and played three seasons in their system, including parts of two summers at Class AA. He missed the entire 2011 season due to a shoulder injury. He attended spring training with the White Sox earlier this month before being released. Anderson, 23, has played the last two seasons in the Toronto Blue Jays organization after being signed as a free agent following his college career at Cal Poly. In 15 starts with Class A Short Season Vancouver of the Northwest League last season, he went 5-3 with a 2.71 ERA. All five of his starts that went at least six innings were quality starts. “Hes a young left-hander that were going to insert into our starting rotation,” Forney said. “He competes well in the strike zone, has tremendous command, great mechanics and hes a really reliable guy. Hes exactly what I was looking for in the back of my rotation.” The Goldeyes now have 23 players signed for the 2014 season, including 12 pitchers and 11 position players. Homer Bailey Jersey . In a special Fathers Day edition of the Three Man Weave, Duane Watson and Will Strickland from TSN 1050s "1 On 1 With Will & Duane" bring on Canadian basketball blog boss Ray Bala of the Can Ball Report to collect ties, aftershave, socks and thoughts on the current state of the NBA Finals!Do the Miami Heat have a chance at making history and winning three straight to win the NBA Finals? Bala: I would say no. They have two things going against them. Firstly, the Spurs have been playing some incredible basketball that has been about as textbook as you can imagine. The teamwork and the defence plus some all-world play both by Kawhi Leonard and Boris Diaw, on the road no less, has been unstoppable. Secondly, Game 5 is in San Antonio and since the already rabid Spurs fans will be sniffing the title now, making the environment something akin to the lion food in the Roman Coliseum. And did I mention that history is not with them either? Strickland: Chance? Yes. Multiple chances, as a matter of fact: Slim and none. As great as the narrative could establish itself to be if Miami miraculously came back to make this a competitive and epic Finals, there is nothing exhibited in these first four games that would indicate that the Heat have the valentine or testicular fortitude to climb that mountain now. Watson: None. The Spurs can smell blood and they dismantled the Heat in Games 3 and 4. Coach Gregg Popovich has his team far too disciplined to rest on their laurels on home court. The Spurs will take the Larry OBrien Trophy in five games, as Miami has no sense of urgency and cant find scoring outside of the Big Three or defend anyone and that goes for all 13 members of the Miami roster. What do you look at as the biggest key to the Spurs success in the Finals? Bala: The biggest key to the Spurs success is their depth of experience. Sure Leonard, Green and Diaw have been playing out of their minds and the Big Three of Parker, Duncan and Ginobili had been solid. But its the experience among all of them, as well as others, that have kept the edge on the Heat. The panic button never seems to get pushed when things start to go awry and even after the Game 2 loss at home, they came back to pummel the Heat on their court twice, running their system and playing their game. Key word in the last sentence being THEIR. That kind of poise in a championship final only comes with experience and I think we are being shown that it will beat out youthful athleticism. Strickland: Remembering how to forget. Coach Popovich brought his charges into training camp before the season, slowly and painfully breaking down how the Spurs let one get away last year, then put it away forever. Pops understanding of how to manage his team throughout the regular season, limiting their minutes in preparation for this moment was genius. But his adjustment of inserting the multi-dimensional point forward Boris Diaw into the starting lineup for Game 3 was so masterful that San Antonio may be counting one for the thumb and never see another Game 6 in these playoffs. Watson: When a team is doing everything right, its hard to pick just one thing. They are moving the ball exceptionally well, in addition to shooting at a high field-goal percentage, but their defence is what is giving the Heat fits. Not just contesting shots, activity in passing lanes or stealing the ball, but second-man rotation has been solid by the Spurs and, as their hallmark, its any player on the floor wearing black and silver, not just the starters. Is Kawhi Leonard a similar player if drafted by any other team in the NBA? Bala: I dont think so. Leonard, in his role now with the Spurs, is in the ideal place. He would be asked to do more of one thing or another with any other team, or less, and that could likely lead to a drop-off in something else. Right now, hes the do-everything athletic guy on a Spurs team that, though, has athletes, doesnt have one like him. Teams in the NBA all have a vet guy, or three, like Kawhi and that would compete with him growing as a player. There is no way that he would be the same player anywhere else for what hes shown us in the Finals. Strickland: No. Being able to come into a team and system that mirrors his character, personality and demeanour to a tee with veteran leaders and a winning culture that wouldnt depend on him to be the face of the franchise right away was ideal for him. The Spurs R.C. Buford knew what he was doing and exactly what he was getting when he traded George Hill to the Pacers for Kawhi Leonard.Watson: Of course not. Hes still a talented and gifted player, but he was drafted by a team that didnt need him to come in right away and score or be a lockdown defender. He is coached by the best in the game and has learned and watched from Hall of Fame players and how to conduct himself as a professional. Does the result of the NBA Finals affect the Heats off-season free agency moves? Bala: Either way you cut it, its a yes. With all but two players guaranteed to be on the roster, this should play a huge role now. Assuming that the Three Amigos take their player options, for one of the two years at least, the Heat will need to find the pieces to build around them within a workable budget for necessary complementary talent. If any of them opts for free agency, the team will have to replace that player AND just about everyone else too. That will be a huge problem because the calibre of player and chemistry will be tough to find. Lose or, if you believe in miracles, win, Miami has a long summer ahead of it. Strickland: Absolutely. The roster is aging in dog years, especially with one of their stars whose name rhymes with "Wwyane Dade." The Heat need to address getting younger players who fit their culture and can contribute right away. Pat Riley will also have to look at shoring up problem areas at the point guard (Kyle Lowry?) and down low with solid bigs who can help drag Miami out of the NBAs basement in rebounding, score a bit and be a defensive presence in the paint. Carmelo Anthony is not the answer to the Heats needs right now. Watson: Not really, although the Finals have shown them that they are in worse shape than they previously thought. If Dwyane Wade is going to retire as a Heat player, the team needs more support. This season alone proves they cant coast through and expect to compete in the Finals. Miami has played a lot of games over the last three years and its apparent they are tired and too top-heavy. They can take a note from the Spurs or two regarding balance. Four games deep, who is the Finals MVP? Bala: My pick is Boris Diaw. I cant believe I just said that. I, like Im sure many have before me, have ragged on him at some point in his career, but hes looking like the championship-era Bulls Scottie Pippen right now. Hes been a catalyst on both ends of the floor and its been his ability to not just make plays, but timely ones has been a sparkplug for the Spurs and a dagger for the Heat. I know Leonard had some big performances, as did Parker, but without Diaw the Spurs could be looking at 2-2 or even 3-1. Strickland: Can an entire team and organization be named MVP? No? Okay. Well, I currently have co-MVPs in Boris Diaw and Kawhi Leonard. French Pastrys insertion into the starting lineup shifted the Spurs offence into high gear, especially Kawhi Leonard. Leonards stat lines in Games 3 and 4 are shinier and MVP-calibre, but Diaw as a catalyst facilitating so many good things on the offence cant be overlooked. For a guy who once was the MVP of a foreign hoops league while averaging 7 PPG says a lot about how Boris Diaws impact on this series. Watson: Kawhi Leonard, despite Tim Duncans consistency. Leonard has shot .590 from the field averaging 16.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, while defending the best player on the planet in LeBron James. He has also forced to make James and the rest of the Heat work on the defensive end and is poised to be holding the Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP Award. Leonard has taken the next step in his career and no better time than the NBA Finals. The Colts running backs overpowered defenders. And when defensive stops were needed, Indy came up with the biggest plays of all.Luck threw one touchdown pass, ran for another Sunday and masterfully milked the clock late before Indys suddenly stout defence snuffed out the Ravens final chance with a daring deflection to preserve a 20-13 victory.Im pretty sure he (Chuck Pagano) is trying to instil the same traits in us with being a physical team, cornerback Vontae Davis said of Indys coach, who spent four seasons on the Ravens staff. It was a physical game. No, it wasnt pretty.Luck threw two interceptions, had one touchdown called back because of a rare penalty on Reggie Wayne and couldnt convert on fourth-and-1 on the Colts opening possession. He still finished 32 of 49 with 312 yards and the TD, and his nimble 13-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter wound up providing the decisive points.Indy also lost two fumbles and two of those four turnovers a€” Lucks third-quarter interception at the Baltimore 18 and Ahmad Bradshaws fumble at the Ravens 10 with 1:49 left a€” made the finish infinitely more difficult. It wasnt over until cornerback Greg Tolers diving deflection prevented Torrey Smith, who had gotten behind him on fourth-and-3 with 32 seconds left.Indianapolis (3-2) has won three straight and now owns a share of the AFC South lead thanks to Houstons overtime loss to Dallas. They (Baltimore) do such a great job of standing strong in the red zone and not giving up touchdowns, Luck said. We knew that coming in. We talked about if we werent getting (scores) early, stick with it. Dont get frustrated. The Colts patience paid off with Lucks 6-yard TD pass to Dwayne Allen with 10:33 left in the third quarter, and then with Lucks TD run with 8:56 left in the game that made it 20-6.But it was a strange game. Both teams missed scoring chances in the first half when they couldnt convert on fourth down. Both coaches, Pagano and John Harbaugh, lost first-half challenges as they attempted to get spots overturned. The teams combined for seven turnovers, and Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco was sacked a season-high four times a€” one more than his combined total in the first four weeks this season.Even Lucas Oil Staadiums retractable roof was closed at halftime because of the threat of rain, the first time thats happened during a regular-season game since the stadium opened in 2008.ddddddddddddThe biggest surprise might have been Indys surging defence, which allowed a season-low 13 points, limited Baltimore (3-2) to just 1 of 11 third-down conversions and helped produce a 17 1/2-minute disparity in time of possession.Flacco finished 22 of 38 for 235 yards and no touchdowns, and his top two receivers a€” Steve Smith and Torrey Smith a€” combined to make eight catches for 72 yards. Baltimores only touchdown came on Justin Forsetts 11-yard TD run with 7:16 to go.The predictable result: Baltimores three-game winning streak ended as it dropped to 0-5 all-time in Indianapolis. They came after us a pretty good amount. When they do that, when they come after us, its tough to throw the ball, and we werent quite able to make those plays, Flacco said. We needed to hurt them a little bit more. We needed to take advantage of that.In the first half, it was all defence a€” and all field goals.Steve Smiths fumble on the Ravens first offensive play led to Adam Vinatieris 38-yard field goal.Vinatieri made it 6-0 late in the second quarter after one defensive penalty gave the Colts a second chance to score a touchdown, and an offensive penalty later wiped out a touchdown pass.Baltimore finally got on the scoreboard with Justin Tuckers 52-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, cutting the deficit to 6-3.But in the second half, the Colts applied even more pressure with Luck and the ground game taking charge on offence and the defence holding fast, a strategy Baltimore prefers.(Against Baltimore) you expect things not to go as expected. What you do expect is a tough, gritty, down-to-the-wire (game), Luck said. We survived our mistakes, in a sense. We made our plays enough to get a win.NOTES: Recently reinstated Colts linebacker Robert Mathis watched the game from the sideline. ... SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- It certainly wasnt an ideal way to start an important road trip. The Washington Wizards squandered an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter and eventually lost in overtime to the lowly Sacramento Kings. Isaiah Thomas had his first career triple double with 24 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to help the Kings beat the Wizards 117-111 in overtime on Tuesday night. DeMarcus Cousins and Rudy Gay each added 24 points for the Kings, who rallied in the fourth to send the game into overtime and simply outplayed the Wizard in the extra period to snap a two-game losing streak. Veteran centre Marcin Gortat felt the Wizards let up late in regulation and it cost them a victory. "We were up five points (with 24 seconds left) and celebrating like we had already won the game," said Gortat, who had a physical battle all game with Cousins, the Kings highly aggressive young centre. "We loosened up way too much. We got punished for being too cocky." It was a rare loss for the Wizards, who had won 10 of 13 games before falling to the Kings for the fourth straight time at Sleep Train Arena. After being quiet through three quarters, it was Gay and Cousins delivering big time for the Kings in both the fourth period and overtime. Cousins, who finished with 14 rebounds, had 12 points in the fourth quarter and opened the overtime with two quick baskets and finished with seven points in OT. Gay made numerous clutch shots late in the game and continued that trend in the fourth quarter. He had 10 points in the fourth and six more in overtime. "To turn it around, go up by 11 points and give the game away, it hurts," said Drew Gooden, who scored 18 points in a reserve role. "They executed down the stretch and we couldnt get any rebounds. DeMarcus Cousins is a load." Bradley Beal had 19 points and Gortat also had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Wizards. They had won six of their previous seven road games. John Wall had 14 before fouling out in overtime. The loss prevented Washington from moving within a game of Chicago, which has the fourth best record in the Eastern Conference. The Wizards (35-32) drop to sixth in the East, one percentage point behind Brooklyn (34-31). "Give (Washington coach) Randy Wittman and that team a lot of credit. They are one of the surprising teams in the Eastern Conference and they are trying to get a home-court advantage in the first round," Kings coach Michael Malone said. Gay broke a tie with a jumper and Thomas made a pair of free throws to give Sacramento a 115-111 lead with 13 seconds left. Thomas clinched the victory with two free throws in the closing seconds. Thomas, a 5-foot-9 guard who was a second-round draft pick three years ago, became the Kings starting point guard early this season and has responded by scoring 20 or more points 42 times this season. The triple-double was the first for Sacramento since Cousins had had one against New York on Dec. 28, 2012. "That was big and its great for Isaiah," Gay said. "Im proud of him for the fact that he effected the game in every successful category today. Size doesnt matter. He plays with fire." Trailing by five points in overtime, Ariza hit a 3, Wall converted on a fastbreak layup and Beal made a 3-pointer, giving Washington a 109-107 lead. But consecutive baskets by Cousins and Gay put the Kings ahead by two with 1:01 left. Beal made both free throws to put the Wizards in front 100-95. But a Thomas three and a running shot along the baseline by Gay tied the game at 100 with 5.6 seconds remaining. Beal missed a jumper in the final seconds. Washington started the fourth quarter with eight straight points to take an 81-70 lead. Cousins helped bring the Kings back, scoring eight consecutive points, the final two on a dunk that cut the Washington lead to 86-81 midway through the fourth. NOTES: The Washington starters shot 5 of 20 in the opening quarter and the Wizards trailed 30-19. ... Prior the game, the Kings signed Royce White to a second 10-day contact. He was not activated for the game. White, who was drafted by Houston in 2012, has been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and has never played an NBA game. ... Webster had a four-point play late in the third quarter. ... The Kings are 4-2 in overtime games this season, while the Wizards are 4-7. Air Force 1 Discount . -- Barry Bonds is all set to return to the San Francisco Giants.LONDON -- Per Mertesackers header gave Germany a 1-0 victory over England on Tuesday, sending its fierce rival to back-to-back home losses for the first time in 36 years. Captaining Germany in London, Mertesacker powered in the only goal of the Wembley Stadium friendly after meeting a cross from Toni Kroos in the 36th minute. "The fact that weve won here at Wembley this time-honoured place is a joy for us," Germany coach Joachim Loew said through a translator. While Germany deployed a second-string squad -- and took control after taking the lead -- England started with a strong lineup that couldnt get a shot on target or prevent boos ringing out around the venue at the final whistle for the second time in four days here. England, which was beaten 2-0 by Chile on Friday, has now lost consecutive matches at Wembley for the first time since defeats to Wales and Scotland in 1977. The closest Roy Hodgsons team came to an equalizer was when Andros Townsend struck the post from a long-range strike on a night when Germany goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller had little to do. Germany fans celebrated the win by singing -- in English -- "Footballs coming home" -- taken from the England anthem "Three Lions." It was a miserable way for the English Football Association to round out its 150th anniversary celebrations in front of a 85,934-strong crowd, with Germany exposing the hosts technical deficiencies. "It was a harsh defeat but we needed better quality," Hodgson said. "The effort, the work rate and desire, I cant fault at all. But in the time we had the ball in the German half, we werent as efficient as the Germans were when they had the ball in our half. "The quality of our passing and shooting was not as good as the Germans." England, which beat Germany here in the 1966 World Cup final, was only spared a heavier defeat against a fellow Brazil 2014 qualifier by Joe Harts saves. The Manchester City goalkeeper, who was rested in the Chile friendly, provided a remindder of his abilities three weeks after being dropped by his club following a series of blunders.dddddddddddd A minute before Mertesacker scored his fourth international goal, Hart pulled off a one-handed save to thwart another header from the defender. "We knew set-pieces would be a danger, they had some big players and we were a small team tonight," Hodgson said. Hart wasnt at fault for the goal, with England too porous as Mertesacker evaded Wayne Rooney and Chris Smalling to head home. "Per definitely organized our defence -- he has turned out to be a pillar of strength -- literally speaking in terms of his height," Loew said, praising Mertesackers agility and ball distribution. He helped to ensure England was largely restricted to striking from distance, with captain Steven Gerrard sending the ball onto the roof of the net just before half time. Four minutes into the second half, a fine save from Hart kept out Marco Reus fierce strike after Mario Gotze skipped through the home defence with ease. Mertesacker was left in space again to try again with his head, but nodded over from a corner, while a low save from Hart pushed away Gotzes effort. "I was annoyed at times because we really squandered our chances -- many of them -- when we should have extended our lead much earlier," Loew said. "Especially when England were open in defence, we should have scored that second goal." There were eight changes from the Germany lineup which drew with Italy on Friday as Loew took the friendly as the last chance to experiment, with big names including Bastian Schweinsteiger, Mesut Ozil and captain Philipp Lahm absent. But the international year ahead of the World Cup ended for Germany just as it had begun against France -- with an away win. "I can approach 2014 with a sense of quiet confidence," Loew said. "Many of the players who I wanted to test here today can be proud to have withstood the pressure of playing against such a great crowd." ' ' '
GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Quarterback Aaron Rodgers will miss his third consecutive game and Matt Flynn will become the Green Bay Packers fourth starting quarterback of the season Thursday when the Packers play the Lions in Detroit. Rodgers, who suffered a fractured left collarbone Nov. 4 against Chicago, practiced on Tuesday but was ruled out by coach Mike McCarthy on Wednesday. The Packers have gone 0-3-1 without him. After starting Seneca Wallace in the teams first game without Rodgers and third-stringer Scott Tolzien for the next two games after Wallace landed on injured reserve with a groin injury, McCarthy will turn to Flynn, who rallied the team to a 26-26 tie against the Minnesota Vikings Sunday. Flynn brought the Packers back from a 23-7 fourth-quarter deficit against the Vikings, completing 21 of 36 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown. "Im very comfortable. Feel good with the playbook, feel good with the game plan, and I feel ready to go," said Flynn, who was Rodgers backup from 2008 through 2011 and re-signed with the team Nov. 12 after Wallaces injury. "You know, Im light years ahead of where I would be three weeks into any other system obviously because of the time I spent here. "Ive been hitting the playbook hard and studying, and asking a lot of questions from Aaron, all the receivers, linemen -- how they want things called, and how they want the operation to go. So I feel good." The Packers (5-5-1) are hoping Rodgers will return for their Dec. 8 game against Atlanta at Lambeau Field. Their hope is to stay in the NFC North race until Rodgers returns. The Lions (6-5) and Bears (6-5) are tied for the division lead. While they wont get Rodgers back, the Packers should receive a lift from several other players returning from injury. McCarthy listed right tackle Don Barclay (knee), defensive end Johnny Jolly (groin), outside linebacker Nick Perry (foot/ankle) and cornerback Sam Shields (hamstring) as probable. Shields return is vital with the Packers set to face Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, who leads the NFL in receiving yards (1,198) and is tied for the league lead in touchdown receptions (11). "Im just happy to have Sam Shields back on the field. Obviously hes playing very well for us," McCarthy said. "Calvin Johnson is obviously a dynamic player and hes definitely a real focus for us defensively." In addition to Rodgers, the Packers ruled out running back Johnathan Franklin (concussion/neck), linebacker Jamari Lattimore (quadriceps), and defensive end C.J. Wilson (ankle). Yeezy 350 Italia . Knile Davis returned a kickoff 99 yards for another score. The Chiefs sacked St. Louis quarterback Austin Davis seven times. If there was a fourth phase to football, Kansas City probably would have dominated that, too. After spotting their cross-state rivals the first touchdown, the Chiefs turned up the pressure in every way Sunday. The result was a 34-7 victory, their sixth straight in the series dating to Sept. 24, 1994, when the Rams were still based in Los Angeles.Any time you play good in all three facets, youre going to win a lot of games, said Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, and it felt like we did that.Charles, who last week became the Chiefs career rushing leader, powered over the left side of the line for a touchdown in the first quarter. He added a 36-yard score early in the fourth, dodging a defender at the line of scrimmage and then accelerating past the Rams defence.Cairo Santos added a pair of field goals for Kansas City (4-3), including a career-best 53-yarder right before halftime. Smith was 24 of 28 for 226 yards, and Davis capped the string of 34 unanswered points with a short touchdown run in the fourth quarter.By that point, the banged-up Rams (2-5) were just trying to survive. Its disappointing, said coach Jeff Fisher, whose team was coming off a victory over Seattle. We had a great week, a short-lived bit of momentum, and we werent able to put it all together.Austin Davis finished 15 of 25 for 160 yards with a touchdown and an interception, three of his sacks coming at the hands of Justin Houston. It didnt help that left tackle Jake Long, right guard Rodger Saffold and centre Scott Wells sustained injuries during the game. The Rams were also playing with an injury-depleted defensive backfield. You looked at the injuries they had today, they had three or four rookies starting for them on the defensive side, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. Thats tough. The Rams running back by committee proved to be a bust, too. OAKLAND, Calif. -- In yet another December trade by general manager Billy Beane, the Oakland Athletics have acquired outfielder Corey Brown from the Washington Nationals for cash. Brown has played in 36 major league games in parts of three seasons, batting .175 with two homers and four RBIs. After recently trading Seth Smith to San Diego, the addition of Brown provides further depth to an outfield figuring to feature Yoenis Cespedes in left field, Coco Crisp in centre and Josh Reddick in right. The 28-year-old Brown, a first-round pick by Oakland in the 2007 amateur draft out of Oklahoma State, can play all three outfield positions. Air Jordan Baratas . The Formations Knowing he would be facing one of the premier teams in MLS, Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson elected to revert back to his 4-2-3-1 formation for their away match with Real Salt Lake. Jonny Leveron replaced skipper Jay Demerit in defence, while Kekuta Manneh replaced Pedro Morales; both Demerit and Morales were rested for the match, and stayed behind in Vancouver. Real Salt Lake head coach Jeff Cassar made one change to the team that defeated the Portland Timbers 1-0 the week previous. Joao Plata replaced Olmes Garcia up front, where the diminutive Ecuadorian partnered RSLs top goalscorer, Alvaro Saborio. The Game To suggest the Whitecaps were flat in the opening 45 minutes would be an understatement – they were very poor. They did not make effective use of the space that was available to them (which was in wide areas) and they were half a step slow and half a step late defensively. The result was that the Whitecaps trailed 2-0 after just nine minutes, with RSL getting goals from both Plata and Saborio. RSL very nearly went in at the break up 3-0, but David Ousted did well to deny Plata a second goal just before the halftime whistle. The opening half was a perfect exhibit of the challenge faced when fielding a very young lineup - those players dont yet have the experience to figure out how to fix things when they go wrong on the pitch. Of the six attacking players who started the match, only Kenny Miller (34) can be classified as an experienced player. Matias Laba (22), Gershon Koffie (22), Russell Teibert (21), Kekuta Manneh (19) and Darren Mattocks (23) are young, talented professionals – but when things go wrong, they cannot rely on previous experience to help them turn things around. In the first half, the movement of RSLs midfield caused problems for the Whitecaps. Despite having a numerical advantage, Vancouver struggled to put pressure on the ball. When the Whitecaps did manage to regain possession, they were too often wasteful, giving the ball straight back to RSL, as Teibert did on the opening goal. Offensively, they were never able to use their speed in transition to maximum effect. In Darren Mattocks and Kekuta Manneh, Vancouver had the two quickest players on the pitch. However, neither player was able to use that speed to their advantage, as Vancouver never found their passing rhythm. Both fullbacks, Jordan Harvey and Steven Beitashour, were cautious in their approach when Vancouver had the ball. This was entirely understandable, given Real Salt Lakes formidable home record and their early 2-0 lead. The result was that far too often Vancouver failed to use the only space that RSL conceded to them, which was out wide. This played into RSLs hands perfectly, as their two wide midfielders, Ned Grabavoy and Jake Mulholland, simply dropped slightly deeper to sit alongside Kyle Beckerman when Vancouver tried to build in midfield. The RSL defenders, who compressed the space between lines, supported this tight midfield unit. This meant that there was very little space in which Vancouver could play. Real Salt Lake controlled virtually the entire first half. Robinson and his coaching staff showed their worth once they could sit the players down at the break. There, the coaches were able to correct the mistakes that were being made and give their young players renewed belief in their abilities. The result was a completely different performance from Vancouver in the second half. The Whitecaps aggressively closed space in midfield, pressured the RSL defenders and midfielders into conceding possession, and denied both Plata and Saborio a sight at goal. While Saborio struck the bar with a header in the 80th minute after a quickly taken free kick, the home side appeared content to defend their 2-0 lead. Vancouver showed better control of the ball and much better use of space in wide areas in the second half. There was a confidence in the Whitecaps team that wasnt present in the opening forty-five minutes – a belief that they could not only compete with RSL, but also get something out of the game. Robinson again used his substitutes effectively, bringing Erik Hurtado, Nicolas Mezquida and Sebastian Fernandez into the game. And it was the two Uruguayans – Mezquida and Fernandez – who clawed back a point for Vancouver. Mezquida scored Vancouvers first goal in the 86th minute, knocking home a poor rebound from RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando after great work from Darren Mattocks. Fernandez scored the equalizer deep into stoppage time, ripping a strike from 35 yards past a flat-footed Rimando. The RSL goalkeeper – along with his teammates – will be left to ponder just how they managed to throw away two points after failing to extend their dominant first half performance into the second. The Positives The second half performance from Vancouver was exactly what their fans want to see – positive, confident, attacking play. The pace in Vancouvers team is frightening; Mattocks, Manneh and Hurtado are all likely in the leagues top 10, if not the top 5, in sprint speed. It is really about finding a way for these players to use their assets to maximum effect, which Vancouver did really well in the second half. Good performances from all three substitutes will give Robinson and his coaching staff some decisions to make in choosing their starting lineup for their next match at home on May 3rd against the San Jose Earthquakes (TSN2, 6:30pm ET, 3:30pm PT). It is an enviable problem to have, as every coach much prefers to have too many good players from which to choose than not enough. Real Salt Lake put on the best forty-five minutes of football that I have seen from a team so far this season in the opening half. The concern for Jeff Cassar is finding a way to extend that performance over the course of the game. While they havent found the secret to this yet, RSL is still unbeaten this season. The Negatives Poor performances all around for Vancouver in the opening half, but the silver lining is that this can be used as a teaching moment. With such a young squad of players, the biggest challenge for Robinson is to develop his promising youngsters into seasoned professionals who can solve problems on the pitch, without always requiring the intervention of the coaching staff. This isnt a job that will happen overnight, and the players will now be expected to reflect on what they did differently in the second half that they werent doing in the first. As long as the players are able to learn from their mistakes, the opening forty-five minutes can be looked back on as a valuable lesson. Nick Rimando has been sensational for Real Salt Lake this season, so he can be forgiven for having a 10-minute spell to forget at the end of the game. He should have prevented both of Vancouver goals, and on any other day would likely have done so. The Star Man This was the best performance I have seen from Erik Hurtado. The youngster has incredible speed, but is still learning how to best utilize his prized asset. He made a big impact coming off the bench in last weeks 2-2 come-from-behind draw with the Los Angeles Galaxy, and while he didnt score in that game or against Real Salt Lake, he made a very meaningful contribution on Saturday. His willingness to run in behind stretched the RSL back line and created space for his midfielders to operate, effectively changing the game. He is still very raw and has a great deal of learning to do, so it will be important for him to seek out the coaching staff to carry on that education. But he is certainly showing exciting potential at this moment in time as a second half substitute that can change the game. Nolan Arenado Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. BERLIN -- A former World Cup player from Germany came out as gay on Wednesday, rebuking the Russian anti-gay law that threatens to tarnish next months Sochi Olympics and challenging the longstanding stigma against homosexuality in football. With his announcement, Thomas Hitzlsperger became the biggest name in football to declare he is gay. He said he wants to help break down the prejudice against homosexuality that has long permeated the macho, testosterone-fueled culture of the worlds most popular sport. "I am expressing my sexuality because I want to promote the discussion of homosexuality among professional athletes," Hitzlsperger said in the German newspaper Die Zeit, a statement that was widely welcomed by his countrymen and former teammates. His disclosure came less than a month before the start of the Winter Games in Sochi, which have been the focus of a furious backlash in the West against a recently enacted Russian law banning gay "propaganda." The Olympics "are ahead of us, and I think we need some critical voices to counter the campaigns by various governments against homosexuality," Hitzlsperger said. Before retiring from the game four months ago, the 31-year-old former midfielder played in Englands Premier League and in Germany as well as Italy. He is the first German player to come out and the first from the Premier League. The fact that Hitzlsperger waited until his career was over to make the announcement reflected the persistent taboo in the game, where many players are reluctant to discuss homosexuality because they fear the reaction of teammates and fans. Hitzlsperger said he felt the time was right to broach a subject that was "simply ignored." "I get particularly annoyed by the fact that people who know the least are precisely the people to talk the loudest about this issue," he added, noting that the word "gay" is commonly used as a slur against footballers. At many football grounds, sexually themed chants are not uncommon. Fans in Britain sometimes chant songs that are viewed as religiously, sexually or racially offensive. In many European countries, especially in Russia and Eastern Europe, thousands of fans chant obscene songs, defying all attempts to stop them. Hitzlsperger said his own record shattered the idea that gays are "sissies." "I was a pretty tough guy with an extremely strong shot. Thats not something many can claim," he said. "My nickname is The Hammer. Its complete nonsense that gay men are unmanly." In England, outspoken Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton praised Hitzlsperger for his "courage" but lamented that he had to wait until now to make his announcement. "Sad times when people have to wait until they retire from their chosen profession before they feel other people will judge them solely on who the human being is," Barton said on Twitter. "Shame on all of us as a society." Hitzlsperger said he grew up in a small community in Catholic-dominated Bavaria, where homosexuality was treated as something unnatural or even criminal. He had a long-term relationship with a girlfriend and planned to marry her. "But then after eight years, the relationship ended without my partner knowing about my feelings for men. That was six years ago," Hitzlsperger said. "Only in the last few years did it dawn on me that I would rather live with a man." Hitzlsperger represented Germany at the 2006 World Cup and 2008 European Championship. He played for Bayern Munichs youth teams before switching to English club Aston Villa in 2001. He later played for Stuttgart, Italian club Lazio, West Ham, Wolfsburg and then Everton in the Premier League. "Homosexuality is not a serious issue in England, Germany or Italy, not in the dressing room in any case," said Hitzlsperger, who made 52 appearances for Germanys national team from 2004 to 2010. "Thats why its not easy to find anyone in the football scene who will talk publicly about his sexual orientation. To this day, I dont know any footballer personally who has made this an issue. "I was never ashamed of how I am," said Hitzlsperger, adding that the behaviour of some of his teammates was sometimes hard to take. "Think about it. There are 20 young men sitting around a table drinking. You let most of it go, as long as the jokes are halfway funny and the rubbish about homosexuals is not hugely offensive." Last February, American player Robbie Rogers declared he was gay before announcing his retirement. He returned to action with the Los Angeles Galaxy after an overwhelmingly positive reaction to his declaration. Former English player Justin Fashanu, who played for Norwich and Nottingham Forest, was the first footballer to say openly that he was gay in 1990. He committed suicide eight years later at age 37. Swedish defender Anton Hysen came out in 2011. Athletes from other sports have also spoken about their sexuality. Last month, British Olympic diver Tom Daley said he was in a relationship with a man. Other high-profile gay athletes include former Wales rugby captain Gareth Thomas, English cricketer Steven Davies and former NBA players Jason Collins and John Amaechi. On Twitter, German forward Lukas Podolski welcomed his former international teammates announcement, calling it "brave and right" and "an important sign in our time." Another former international teammate, Arne Friedrich, tweeted, "Im proud of you. Good decision and at the right time in my opinion." Government spokesman Steffen Seibert praised Hitzlspergers announcement on behalf of Chancellor Angela Merkel. "We judge footballers by whether they conduct themselves well and with dignity on and off the pitch, and I believe both are true for Mr. Hitzlsperger," Seibert said. German football federation president Wolfgang Niersbach said Hitzlsperger "was always an example for whom I had the highest respect, and this respect is even greater now." Germany team manager Oliver Bierhoff said players were unaware of Hitzlspergers sexuality until after his retirement, when the player informed both him and Germany coach Joachim Loew. Said Bierhoff: "Well give him every support so he can continue on his courageous path." Loew hoped Hitzlspergers "announcement helps us all to be more relaxed about this issue." Jake Daubert Jersey . The newly elected district governor had already relinquished the right to host the 2019 Universiade, a multi-sport event involving thousands of university students from around the world. A MotoGP race originally scheduled for this year also had to be cancelled. While all efforts are underway to organize an event not essential to the society of the federal district, public employees are not getting paid, public prosecutors wrote in their recommendation to cancel the race.Brasilia was one of the 12 World Cup host cities last year, and its stadium, the Estadio Nacional, was deemed the most expensivee of those built or renovated for the football tournament.ddddddddddddIndyCar said on Thursday it was caught by surprise by the cancellation. It called the announcement a great disappointment, but said it was economically protected from such action. The government admitted there was a $27 million fine for a breach of contract, but said it was valid only for the contract between IndyCar and the Brazilian network promoting the race, Band TV.The network released a brief statement lamenting the hasty cancellation, and said it would begin advising fans how to reimburse their tickets. Prices started at about $27.The government agency claimed the decision was not unilateral, and that it tried to re-work the contracts to make sure the race went ahead.Band was responsible for the series return to Brazil in 2010, when it raced on a street circuit in Sao Paulo for four consecutive years. The network was not able to secure the event in 2014 because of financial problems, but it reached a partnership with the previous government in Brasilia to organize the race this year. The contract with Brasilia runs to 2019. Organizers said work at the track was almost finalized. The Brazilian auto racing confederation lamented the cancellation, and said it hoped the renovation at the Brasilia track would continue despite the decision.Without a doubt, we are missing the opportunity to see a great event in Brazil, confederation president Cleyton Pinteiro said.___Follow Tales Azzoni at http://twitter.com/tazzoni ' ' 'lled the suspension "harsh." PHILADELPHIA -- The 76ers fans came to celebrate Allen Iversons No. 3. Trevor Ariza left them talkin about 40. Ariza made eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 40 points to help the Washington Wizards win their sixth straight game, 122-103 over Philadelphia on Saturday night. Ariza made all six 3-point attempts in the first quarter for 24 points and finished 14 of 23 from the floor overall. The 76ers lost their 13th straight game on the night they retired Iversons No. 3. Iverson had his number sent to the rafters, fit between Maurice Cheeks No. 10 and Charles Barkleys No. 34. The Sixers even gave him a boat named, "The Answer." The Sixers enjoyed their first sellout of 20,856 for Iversons triumphant homecoming. The fans, though, saw the same old sorry Sixers. Ariza had his milestone game in front of one of his childhood favourites. "What he brought to the game made me love the game the way I love it," he said. "He was amazing for a lot of years and he definitely changed the culture of the NBA. This was his night and, I guess, thats definitely a thanks for all the things hes done throughout my life and my career. "Just being a fan of his since I was young, its great to be able to perform that way on a big night like that for him." Ariza had plenty of help for a Wizards team making a run in the Eastern Conference. John Wall had 17 points and tied a career high with 16 assists, and Marcin Gortat had 13 points and 14 rebounds. Ariza, averaging 14.3 points, seemed like he would top his career high of 33 in the first 12 minutes. The Sixers were helpless as the 6-foot-8 forward made his 3-point shots with the ease of a pop-a-shot contest. With the building buzzing over Iversons retirement ceremony, Ariza silenced them at stretches with six 3s and 9 of 10 shooting overall, helping the Wizards storm out to a 15-point lead. Wall had the assist on most of those looks and finished the quarter with eight. "What more can you ask than a guy who wants to see you succeed," Ariza said. "I feel like thats what we do here now; we all want to see each other succeed." The fans were mostly distracted by the parade of former greats the Sixers trotted out for Iversons big night. They went wild for Julius Erving, Moses Malone, and former team president Pat Croce. But they came for the global superstar who popularized "talkin about practice." The Sixers may as well have turned the arena into an AI museum. Four banners greeted fans at the main concourse entrance, and photos of him were plastered all around the arena. The merchandise stands sold Iverson jerseys for $130, and lower level tickets were going for as much for $1,280 on Stubhub about an hour before the 7:30 p.m. tipoff. The fans loved him, and he blew them kisses after the No. 3 was raised to show how much he loved them back. "I am Philly," Iverson said. "Its always going to be that way." Wall, who had his 22nd double-double, returned to the court at halftime to record Iversons ceremony. "He was my role model and I looked up to him," he said. "Being a small guard, thats where I took a lot of my game from. This city embraced him and let him be who he was as a person. He always gave his best effort. "I always wanted to grow braids like Iverson. The only thing I didnt have was the tattoos." Iversons return injected a rare dose of excitement into a franchise playing some of the worst basketball in the league. The Sixers, in full-blown rebuilding mode, lost their 12th straight home game. The Wizards made some history as well, scoring a Wells Fargo Center record 74 points in the first half and led by 12. Perhaps fueled by Iversons ceremony, the Sixers went on a 9-0 run in the third to trim the gap to 12 points. It just wasnt enough and the Sixers allowed 100-plus points for the 13th straight game. Tony Wroten led the Sixers with 19 points and Thaddeus Young had 17. Coach Brett Brown didnt hesitate when asked if he wondered if the Sixers would win another game. "All the time," he said. Phil Taylors gamesmanship at 12-5 did little to rattle Michael van Gerwen, who proved he could not be intimidated by even the best players on planet darts, says Rod Harrington. The brilliant Dutchman retained his World Matchplay title with a ruthless 18-10 defeat of Taylor at Blackpools Winter Gardens on Sunday evening. MVG romps to Matchplay glory Michael van Gerwen beats Phil Taylor 18-10 in World Matchplay final Having lost out to Taylor two years ago, he followed up his 2015 success against James Wade by defeating the 15-time world champion with a clinical display. The defeat for Taylor was his first in a World Matchplay final, and not even his eccentric behaviour in the 18th leg could dampen a procession for the undisputed world No 1. Taylor hailed Van Gerwen the greatest player hes ever played against He is an exceptional darts player, Harrington told Sky Sports. Hes got everything in his locker and for a young man hes an intelligent guy. He knows what hes got to do and he had a game plan to get out of the gate quickly and bully Phil Taylor, and thats exactly what he did.He knew that if he got in front of Taylor and make Taylor chase him, then Phil would go back to the first three games this week and not the game against Gary Anderson. Wayne Mardle agreed with his fellow pundit and claimed Taylor was desperate to try anything to get back into a contest knowing all too well he was losing, but failed to rattle Van Gerwens cage. Taylor said him and the others are not good enough but if Phil believes hes got to do more and hes not good enough, hes lacking belief because he said it himself, thats a big thing, said Hawaii 501. Is he just handing it over? Is it, maybe Im not good enough anymore? My opinion of the 18th leg was if I dont do something, I dont create something, then maybe Im going to get beat 18-5. Sometimes [Taylor] likes to intimidate another human being, whether it being the scoreline or just being confrontational, I just think he was looking for something. Van Gerwen defeated Taylor 18-10 in the final To be honest, the next three or four legs were the best three of four legs he had in the match but Michael was just too good. Whatever he tried, it didnt work and it was one of those things.I personally think that Phil Taylor lost a bit of belief early on. He was 3-2 down, didnt lose it then. Sometimes you need to take your opponent off his rhythm. LOS ANGELES -- Zack Greinke and Jhoulys Chacin both had to grind through six innings Tuesday night. The difference for the Los Angeles Dodgers was the home run ball. Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run shot against Chacin before leaving with a hand injury, and Greinke got some critical outs with runners in scoring position during a 4-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Matt Kemp also went deep and Carlos Triunfel hit his first major league home run after replacing Ramirez. Greinke (9-3) threw a season-high 117 pitches over six innings, allowing a run and three hits with five strikeouts and two walks. "It was definitely a tough game," said Greinke, who tied St. Louis Adam Wainwright and Cincinnatis Alfredo Simon for the NL lead in wins. "It seemed like they had guys on base every inning. There were a lot of foul balls on two-strike counts where they just kept fighting it off. So it gets really tough." Ramirez, a three-time All-Star shortstop and the 2009 NL batting champion, left in the seventh with a bruised ring finger on his right hand after Corey Dickersons hard grounder to him deflected into short centre field for an RBI double that trimmed the Dodgers lead to 3-2. "That was a rocket -- kind of an in-between hop to Hanley," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss, who played 1,397 games at shortstop in the majors and 37 of them at Dodger Stadium. "Theres not much you can do there as a shortstop. You hope that you can smother it if it falls at your feet, but that ball was hit so hard, theres not a lot that Hanley could do on that one." X-rays on Ramirezs throwing hand were negative. "Thats great news for us. We obviously dodged a big bullet," catcher A.J. Ellis said. "Hanleys probably the biggest part of our lineup when were going right. He carried us last year, and I feel like hes getting close to that point where he can carry us again. Hes definitely one of the best bats in all of baseball, and well be happy to get him back whenever hes ready." Triunfel took over at shortstop and reliever J.P. Howell gave way to Brandon League. The Rockies loaded the bases, but League retired Wilin Rosario on a grounder to third. Triunfel provided an insurance run against Tommy Kahnle with a towering drive that landed in the lower seats in the left-field corner. Brian Wilson pitched a scoreless eighth and Kenley Jansen got three outs for his 20th save, the third straight season that the former catcher has reached that figure. Chacin (1-5) gave up three runs, seven hits and three walks in six innings. The right-hander escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth when he retired pinch-hitter Justin Turner on a popup. "I knew he didnt want to come out of that game. I just went out there to check with him and make sure he was OK," Weiss said. "I wanted to let him try to get through that inning because he battled all night, so I felt he earned that. He stepped up and pitched his way through that inning." Eleven members of the Los Angeles Kings escorted the Stanley Cup to Dodger Stadium for a pregame ceremony, four days after they won their second NHL championship in three years. The Dodgers posed with them for a group photo, then showed off their own "power play" as Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the third and Kemp led off the fourth with his seventh of the season. Greinke also received some defensive help. Rookie third baseman Miguel Rojas robbed Dickerson in the third with a skidding, backhanded stop down the line. Right fielder Yasiel Puig took away a potential bloop single from Rosario in the fourth with a diving grab after a long run. Greinke got through the first unscathed after giving up one-out singles by Dickerson and Troy Tulowitzki. The Rockies loaded the bases with none out in the sixth, but all they got off Greinke was a sacrifice fly from Rosario. "Zack competed. They really battled him hard and he really grinded through some tough innings," Ellis said. "That was huge for us. That inning could have spiraled out of control and really depleted our bullpen." NOTES: Conn Smythe Trophy winner Justin Williams and his now clean-shaven Kings teammates took batting practice, fielded grounders and shagged flies. Boston MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Boston Red Sox and free-agent shortstop Stephen Drew have agreed on a one-year contract through the end of this season, the team announced Wednesday. Drew takes the 25-man roster spot of left-hander Felix Doubront, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strain in his pitching shoulder. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but multiple outlets reported that Drew will received around $10 million -- the prorated portion of the $14.1 million offer he declined last November. Drew batted .253 with 13 homers and a .333 on-base percentage in 124 games for the Red Sox last season, then started all 16 postseason games in Bostons run to the World Series title. Teams were reluctant to sign the eight-year veteran in the offseason because they would have had to surrender a high draft pick since Drew received a qualifying offer from the Red Sox. Boston will not have to forfeit a draft pick for re-signing Drew because he was its own free agent. Doubront started Tuesdays game against Toronto, a 7-4 Boston loss. He left in the fifth inning and said later he felt numbness in his shoulder, described by the Red Sox on Wednesday as "fatigue." Adidas NHL Jerseys 2020 . LOS ANGELES -- Through most of the first two months of the season, Yasiel Puig batted second and Hanley Ramirez hit third for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ramirez is still hitting behind Puig, only now they are in the third and fourth spots, and the change is starting to generate positive results for manager Don Mattingly. Ramirez homered twice, drove in five runs and scored four times, tying career highs in all three categories and leading the defending NL West champions to a 12-2 rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday. "I just try to help the team any way I can," Ramirez said. "When Donnie asked me if I was OK with it, I said: "I just want to win. Puigs been doing a great job, so why not hit him third so he can learn how to drive runs in?" Ramirez, whose 4 for 4 day increased his career average against Pittsburgh to .362, hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning against Brandon Cumpton and led off the sixth against Bryan Morris with his ninth of the season. The 2009 NL batting champion and three-time All-Star shortstop is 8 for 20 with eight RBIs in five starts in the cleanup spot after missing four games because of a sore left calf. "He found some good pitches to hunt and put some good swings on some balls," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "The history hes got against this organization is significant. I saw him break in. I had him on the All-Star team in 2008. Hes a good player, a good hitter, and hes done some damage at the plate. He also stole a base today, so that shows you his wheels OK." Puig had an infield hit in the third inning and has reached base in 32 straight games, the longest active streak in the majors. He is 13 for 32 with a homer and three RBIs in nine games since Mattingly moved him from second to third in the lineup, and the Dodgers are 5-4 during that stretch. Hyun-Jin Ryu (6-2) breezed to his third straight victory, allowing two runs and 10 hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Last Monday at Dodger Stadium, Ryu did not allow a baserunner through the first seven innings of his 4-3 victory over Cincinnati. "He threw the ball really well," catcher Drew Butera said. "He had good command, changed speeds well in and out and did a real good job focusing on every pitch, and he made my job easy. Our guys do a really good job of having a plan and purposse every pitch.dddddddddddd" Jamey Wright was credited with his second save in 19 major league seasons, after pitching the final three innings and allowing one hit. His other save was in 2011 with Seattle. Cumpton (0-2) was charged with 11 runs -- 10 earned -- and 11 hits in 3 2-3 innings. The 25-year-old right-hander had allowed a total of one run during the first four innings of his eight previous major league starts. "I was getting behind guys, so they were sitting on heaters and doing what they get paid to do," Cumpton said. "When I made my pitch, it found a hole -- and when I didnt make my pitch, it found a gap. Its discouraging, but its only one start. Ive gotten beaten around before and Im sure its going to happen again. But Im not going to hang my head over it." The Dodgers staked Ryu to an 11-1 lead with two runs in the first inning, four in the third and five more in the fourth. Ramirez and Matt Kemp triggered the onslaught with two-out RBI singles during Cumptons 28-pitch first inning. Cumpton threw only 18 pitches during the Dodgers third-inning rally, as four batters put the ball in play on the first offering and two others did on the second. "I knew almost all of them were going to be aggressive early in the count," Cumpton said. "Thats a great lineup. They made me throw pitches, and when I got behind, they made me pay." Andre Ethier started things off in the third with a drive that popped out of left fielder Starling Martes glove for a two-base error as his left arm hit the fence. Ramirez and Justin Turner had RBI singles, Adrian Gonzalez doubled home a run and Kemp hit a sacrifice fly. After Ramirezs first homer, Turner chased Cumpton three batters later with another RBI single and Butera greeted Jeanmar Gomez with a two-run triple. Javan Felix contributed 10 points for the Longhorns (11-2), who recovered from a three-point overtime loss to Stanford last Tuesday. Seth Gearharts game-best 24 points werent nearly enough for the Owls (3-8), who have lost two straight since winning two in a row. Marcus Jackson totaled 10 points in a losing cause. Rivers dunk with 4:44 left in the opening half was the last time Rice led by its greatest margin of three, 22-19. Texas finished the half with 10 straight points, including seven in a row from Turner, and took a 29-22 edge to the break on a pair of Cameron Ridley free throws. The Longhorns managed to increase their lead to eight, 37-29 on a Felix layup, and were also up by that margin with 12:40 to go before the Owls awoke and trimmed their deficit to 53-51 on a pair from the line by Gearhart inside of six minutes to play. Rice, however, missed three consecutive shots from long distance in the ensuing two-plus minutes, and Texas gained some breathing room when Ridley split a pair from the line and Holmes completed a three-point play to make it 57-51 with 2:50 on the clock. Jackson missed a layup at the other end and Kendal Yancy converted his try and the following foul shot for a nine-point bulge, and the hosts cruised to the finish. In the early stages, Texas led 8-3, but back-to-back triples from Jackson gave Rice a one-point advantage. The schools traded turns with the lead for the next several minutes. Game Notes Texas shot 48 percent (12-of-25) in the second half but just 43.4 percent for the contest ... Rice was sent to the free-throw line just six times and made five, while the Longhorns converted 17-of-27 from the charity stripe ... Jackson also picked up five assists and a game-high four steals. On Tuesday, 10 players drove in runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Chicago White Sox, with the Angels winning the first game 8-4 and capping the night with a 7-5 victory. "I think our guys on the offensive side have proven that theyre going to pressure teams and get us runs," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Our challenge is going to be able to hold leads and we were able to do it today in two games." With Tuesdays wins, the Angels moved to within 3 1/2 games of first-place Oakland in the AL West. "We kept putting the pressure on," said reliever Joe Smith, who earned saves in both games. "After you win that first game of a doubleheader, its really hard to win two. ... (But) you put those runs right up on them early, that was huge for us." Calhoun homered and scored twice as the Angels held off the White Sox to complete the sweep. Kendrick added two hits and scored two runs as the Angels improved to 5-0 against Chicago this season. The twin-bill was quickly arranged after Mondays game was rained out. Jered Weaver (9-6) worked 5 2/3 innings for the win in the second game, allowing nine hits while striking out six. Chicago starter Scott Carroll (2-5) took the loss after pitching six-plus innings and giving up seven runs and 10 hits. The Angels manufactured three second-inning runs on four straight singles and a fielders choice, including RBIs credited to Kendrick, C.J. Cron and Grant Green. "You get yourself in trouble and put yourself in bad spots. It happened in both games," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "Especially with this lineup. You dont want to put anybody on and give them extra chances." The White Sox got two back with Conor Gillaspies first home run of the season, a two-run shot that drove in Alexei Ramirez with no outs. In the fifth, Calhoun stroked Carrolls 1-0 pitch into the right-field bullpen, scoring Green for a 5-2 lead. Kendrick scored on Hank Congers sixth-inning single for a 6-2 lead. The White Sox added three runs in the sixth as Gillaspies RBI single scored Ramirez, while Dayan& Viciedos homer with one out brought home Gillaspie, cutting the deficit to 6-5.dddddddddddd In the seventh, Carroll left with two runners on and no outs. White Sox reliever Jake Petricka walked two batters, forcing in Calhoun for a 7-5 Angels lead. In the first game, Trout hit a three-run homer, Pujols followed with No. 509 of his career and Garrett Richards allowed two hits in eight innings. Josh Hamilton also homered for Los Angeles, his first since June 3. Trouts shot off starter Hector Noesi (2-6) evened the score at 3 in the fifth. Pujols put the Angels ahead with his 17th of the season, tying Gary Sheffield for 24th place on the career chart. Jose Abreu hit his major league-leading 26th home run in the first to give Chicago a 3-0 cushion. Baltimores Nelson Cruz also has 26 homers. Richards (9-2) quickly recovered and improved to 5-0 since May 30. He struck out nine, walked two and matched his longest outing of the season. "I think I was the same pitcher from beginning to end," Richards said. "I wasnt going to let three runs in the first ruin my day." "(Richards) was great," Ventura said. "We got him early when Jose (homered) in the first inning, but after that, we didnt get many good swings against him. He had good stuff. " Noesi didnt allow a hit until the fifth, when Collin Cowgill beat out an infield single. He was pulled with no outs in the sixth and was charged with five earned runs and three hits. He walked seven and struck out seven. NOTES: Ventura said LHP Chris Sale (7-1, 2.30 ERA) is a worthy All-Star candidate despite spending a month on the disabled list. NEW ORLEANS -- Anthony Davis and Brian Roberts proved a pair of second-year players can carry the young Pelicans to a victory over a veteran team with playoff aspirations. Davis had 27 points and 10 rebounds, Roberts scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half, and New Orleans beat the Atlanta Hawks 105-100 on Wednesday night. "Im always telling our guys, Everybody has written you guys off, so what do you have to lose? Just go out there and play. Ive got your back either way," Pelicans coach Monty Williams said. Paul Millsap had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who have lost two in a row. DeMarre Carroll added 22 points. "Roberts made some big shots," said Hawks guard Jeff Teague, who had 11 points and 13 assists. "We just got stagnant on defence. Our intensity on defence just wasnt there. We didnt play with attention to detail in the last couple of plays." Davis and Roberts made Atlanta pay, each scoring six points in the final 3:40. Davis has been stellar all season, and his performance against Atlanta marked the 16th time hes had at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in the same game. Roberts only recently moved into a starting role at point guard because of Jrue Holidays stress fracture in his right shin. Roberts made only one of five shots in the first half before turning in one of the best second halves of his young career. "Hes growing up and he understands when to make plays," Davis said. Roberts did have one glaring error when he had a turnover that led to a score during a late 7-0 Atlanta run that trimmed the Hawks 10-point deficit to three with a little less than a minute left. Roberts made up for it with a running, off-balance floater on New Orleans next possession to make it 100-95 with 20 seconds to go. "That was a tough turnover right there," Roberts said. "I just try to move on and focus on the next play. ... I was going to get it back and I was able to make that floater and finish them off." Eric Gordon added 18 points and Anthony Morrow 16 for the Pelicans, who have won six of their last nine games. Atlanta was in position to win when Mike Scotts 3-pointer capped an 8-0 run and gave the Hawks an 83-76 lead with 7:45 to play, but the Pelicans then ran off nine straight points to regain the lead. "Thats a tough loss for our group," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said, referring to his clubs blown fourth-quarter lead. "Our execution needs to improve when were in that situation." The Hawks led for the entire third quarter, taking their largest lead at 54-47 on Carrolls 3 12 seconds into the period. Scott hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points for the Hawks, while Lou Williams had 11 points. The teams stayed within single digits of each other for nearly the entire game. The largest lead for either team was 10 for New Orleans after Davis free throws late in the fourth quarter. That lead lasted all of 8 seconds before Scott hit a 3. Atlanta had 14 3s on 30 attempts from deep, with Carroll hitting four. The Hawks had one stretch in which they hit nine straight 3-point attempts -- their last four of the second quarter and first five of the third. The Pelicans, however, scored 20 points on free throws, while Atlanta had only 10. New Orleans also outrebounded Atlanta 50-38. MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Russell Westbrook is putting to rest any doubts he has recovered from the knee injury that forced him to miss the first two games of the season. Westbrook scored 27 points and added nine assists to lead the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 116-100 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night. Westbrooks performance against the Grizzlies followed double-doubles Tuesday night in a win over Atlanta (14 points, 11 assists) and Sunday in a victory over Indiana (26 points, 13 assists). "Im great, I feel good," said Westbrook, who was sidelined by a lateral meniscus tear to start the year. "Im taking it one day at a time and Im taking care of my body, which is most important. Im trying to get us wins." Kevin Durant, the NBAs leading scorer, added 18 points and six rebounds. Reserve guard Jeremy Lamb scored a career-high 18 points to help the Thunder to their fourth straight win and 12th in 13 games. Neither Westbrook nor Durant played in the fourth quarter, when the Thunder maintained a double-digit lead. "Russell is calming down, relaxing and just playing his game," Durant said. "He is getting confidence. We tell him when he does no one can stop him." Westbrook scored 12 points in the first seven minutes of the third quarter, including a three-point play after the Grizzlies had trimmed the Thunder lead to 13 points. The Grizzlies never got closer than 13 the rest of the way. "Russells a no-excuse player," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "We could play back-to-back, we could play four in five nights, we can play every night for a month and hes going to come in and play the game that he loves to play every night. He sets the tone for us and our guys do a great job following his lead." Mike Conley had 20 points for the Grizzlies and Zach Randolph and reserve Jon Leuer scored 17 apieece.dddddddddddd Memphis ended a season-long six-game homestand with the loss. A depleted Grizzlies squad -- missing starters Marc Gasol and Tony Allen with injuries -- stayed close to the Thunder through most of the first half and trailed 40-37 after Conleys floater in the lane with 4:19 to go in the second quarter. Then the Thunder put together a 17-5 run to end the half for a 57-42 advantage at the break. During the run, Durant had two driving dunks and Westbrook added a 3-pointer and four assists. Oklahoma City opened the third quarter by extending its lead to 20 points as Westbrook scored nine points during a 13-8 start. The Thunder boosted their advantage to as many as 24 points in the second half on several occasions giving the Thunder the luxury of resting Durant and Westbrook. "The first five minutes of the third quarter were probably the most important of the game," Westbrook said. "We wanted to come out and set the tone early defensively and we did a good job of that." The Thunder were playing back-to-back games after defeating the Hawks Tuesday night in Atlanta. The Thunder, who shot 61 per cent in a win over Indiana on Sunday, shot 56 per cent against the Grizzlies. Memphis shot 42 per cent and was outrebounded, 42-33. "The Thunder is a good team," Leuer said. "This is what they do. They go on runs. We tried to limit their easy stuff, but they got a few open looks and got into a rhythm after that." NOTES: Thunder reserve centre Steven Adams sprained his right ankle in the second half and didnt return. ... BEIJING -- Kevin Koes curling team accomplished what has been a rare feat this season, winning its opening game at the 2014 world mens curling championship. Koes Calgary squad of third Pat Simmons, second Carter Rycroft, and lead Nolan Thiessen methodically cruised to a 6-3 victory Saturday over Denmarks Rasmus Stjerne. "We lost the first game at the (Canadian Curling) trials, we lost our first game at the provincials and we lost our first game at the (Tim Hortons) Brier," Rycroft said, laughing. "Coach (John) Dunn said, I dont want that to happen again. "Mission accomplished: 1-and-0." It took some time for both teams to adjust to ice conditions in an arena more noted for hosting the 2008 Olympic volleyball competition. Canada pounced on Danish misses in the third end to score two, then stole single points in the following two ends to take control. Canadas airtight defence went to work the rest of the way. "If youre up, your shots are usually simpler, and with the ice being tricky, thats a big advantage," said Koe. "If youre having to play come-arounds and freezes to get back into it, those arent easy to begin with, let alone when the ice is tricky, so if you can throw them hard, which we like to do, thats always a good sign." Stjerne, who skipped the Danes to a fourth-place finish at the 2013 worlds in Victoria, said Canada is a "tough team to come back on." "They never gave us an inch," Stjerne said. "I felt like we had a couple opportunities to get a deuce, but we never took advantage and it bit us in the end." Canada returns to the ice Sunday morning against Japans Yusuke Morozumi, a 9-5 loser to Norways Thomas Ulsrud on Saturday night. "You know what? (The Danes) are a good team, they made the playoffs last year, so theyre one of the better teams here," said Koe, who was scored at 96 per cent for the night. "And weve got off to a slow start everywhere this year, so to get the win under our belt feels good." In other Saturday games, Oskar Eriksson of Sweden (2-0) topped Pete Fenson of the U.S. (0-2) 8-6, while Johnny Jahr of Germany, who was 0-9 at the Olympics, improved to 2-0 with a 9-5 win over Evgeny Arkhipov of Russia (1-1). Earlier Saturday, Russia edged Switzerlands Peter de Cruz 8-7, Jiri Snitil of the Czech Republic downed the U.S. 9-7, Germany beat Chinas Rui Liu 11-5 and Sweden doubled Scotlands Ewan MacDonald 8-4. Koe won gold in his only previous appearance at the world championship, taking top spot at the 2010 tournament in Cortina DAmpezzo, Italy. Koe had a strong performance at the Tim Hortons Brier earlier this month and is enjoying another solid year on the World Curling Tour. Canada has won gold three of the last four world championships. Fourteen words to be exact. "Disappointed. I dont agree with it. It is what it is and move on," Dempsey said after the Seattle Sounders wrapped practice on Thursday. The real concern for some is that the suspension came right before a major U.S. national team exhibition against Mexico next Wednesday. By the time Dempsey takes the field against Mexico in Glendale, Ariz., it will have been more than two weeks since Dempsey last played. And while its just an exhibition, its significant because it will be the last U.S. match before World Cup camp begins in May. "Its a friendly, its not a World Cup qualifier so theres not much pressure that there would be if it was a World Cup qualifying game," Dempsey said. "But its still exciting to represent your country and to play against one of your rivals." Dempsey was suspended and fined for violent conduct toward Toronto FC defender Mark Bloom in a March 15 match. Dempsey hit Bloom in the stomach/groin area, a blow not seen by officials but that was captured by television cameras. Dempsey said after the match that he was trying to slap Blooms hand off his back and did not intend to strike his body. The MLS players union appealed but the suspension was upheld. Dempsey sat last week when Seattle won at Montreal and will be a spectator Saturday when the Sounders host Columbus. Hell return to MLS play on April 5 when Seattle travels to rival Portland. U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann was one of Dempseys most vocal supporters afteer the suspension was announced.dddddddddddd He was quick to point out the number of fouls Dempsey has taken since returning to MLS. "Its very disappointing to see Clint be the only person punished from this game," Klinsmann said last week. "There is a foul against him in the sixth minute that should have been a red card. The persistent fouling continued throughout the game, and hes getting punished for a reaction following all those fouls. Yes he made a mistake, but if opponents dont get penalized for consistently fouling, it only encourages them to continue that approach." According to stats provided by MLS, Dempsey is the most fouled player in the league since Aug. 10 of last season. Dempsey, the U.S. captain, appreciated Klinsmanns concern. "Yeah, for sure its always good that the manager has your back and I appreciate that," Dempsey said. "All I can do is keep working hard and keep working on my fitness after training and making sure I play well when Im with the national team, like I have always done in the past. And make sure I keep playing good with the national team moving forward and pay him back for his faith in me." Dempsey said one solution to the fouls would be for more yellow cards to be handed out earlier in the match. He believes that could create a better rhythm to the game. "I think its important to protect every player," Dempsey said. "The sooner you start giving the cards for reckless fouls then it cuts down on a lot of things and it makes the game more exciting to watch because there is more free flow to it." CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Michael Jordan anticipates the Charlotte Hornets will make another big splash this off-season. Jordan said Monday with three draft picks and more than $13 million to spend in free agency the Hornets are in position to make a "big difference" in upgrading their roster. "I think we made a difference last year with Big Al (Jefferson) and some of the acquisitions -- and I dont anticipate this year being any different," Jordan said. Behind Jefferson, who was recently named third-team All-NBA, Charlotte made the playoffs for the first time since 2010 -- the year Jordan took over as majority owner. Jordan is hoping Jeffersons success will convince other big-name free agents to come to Charlotte. "I always thought Charlotte was a great destination," Jordan said. "Big Al has proven that you can come here and make a big difference. Hopefully we can look at that and attract some other superstars." Jordan spoke Monday following a presentation at Hornets Nest Elementary school in which he, along with Lowes and Fox SportsSouth, donated $250,000 to Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. The event marked the organizations first community service initiative since the changing its name from Bobcats to Hornets last month. The Hornets have the ninth, 24th and 45h picks in this months draft. If forward Josh McRoberts decides not to opt out of contract the Hornets will have all five starters from last season under contract -- and still have at least $13 million to spend under the NBA salary cap. If McRoberts opts out the team could have closer to $17 million free under the cap. "This year we have a lot of flexibility and Ive been speaking to that over the last three or four years -- flexibility is very important and we are going to use every resource to try to better the team," Jordan said. Charlotte finished last season 43-39 and earned the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs. However, Jefferson injured his foot in the first game of the NBA playoffs and Charlotte was swept by the Miami Heat. Still, it was a big step in the right direction for a franchise that went 28-120 over the two previous seasons, by far the worst record in the NBA during that span. Jordan said he was "very proud" of what his team accomplished under first-year coach Steve Clifford. "The guys came out and took the initiative from coach and he was able to bond (them) and put together a good effort from the team," Jordan said. Jordan said Jefferson, who signed a three-year, $41 million contract last July 4 -- the largest ever given out by the franchise -- was better than advertised. But he said what was even more surprising is how quickly his new teammates adjusted to playing with a dominant low post presence. "Everybody surrounded him and we got better," Jordan said. "McRoberts was a huge part of that. So I think we got better as the year went along." Jordan said Jefferson, who was the only player in the Eastern Conference to average 20 points and 10 rebounds per game last season, deserved to be an All-Star. Jordan wouldnt say specifically what position the team might look to upgrade this off-season, instead saying he wants to find players who truly want to play in Charlotte. Another key, he said, is developing a core of young players including Kemba Walker, Jeffery Taylor, Michael-Kidd-Gilchrist and Cody Zeller. "We have a bunch of young talent that we still are trying to nourish into some better basketball players," Jordan said. "So summer is when we have to make our big leap." Fake Vans From China . Heres a breakdown of where the battles will be, the players involved and how one decision may have an effect on another. This goes without saying: Were working within the confines of the current Jays roster. STARTING ROTATION: Guaranteed: R.A. Dickey, Brandon Morrow, Mark BuehrleAlmost Certain: J.A. Happ As many as nine guys, some with almost no chance of landing the job, but are included here, anyway, are vying for the final available spot. They are Esmil Rogers, Todd Redmond, Drew Hutchison, Kyle Drabek, Marcus Stroman, Sean Nolin, Ricky Romero, Chad Jenkins, Aaron Sanchez and Dustin McGowan. This will be intriguing because there is a business case to be made and, depending on how spring training plays out, potential performance cases to be made. On the business end, Rogers and Redmond are out of options, meaning both must break camp with the club or risk being lost on waivers. The bullpen is an option if neither gets a starting spot – more on that later when we look at the possibility of a seven-man or eight-man bullpen. Hutchison and Drabek each have big league experience. Drabek dating back to 2010 and when he cracked the opening day roster a year later and Hutchison when he was a mid-April call up two seasons ago. Both are back to full health following Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgeries in the summer of 2012. Drabek needs to drastically improve on 1.683 career WHIP over 169 1/3 innings, particularly in the walks department – hes averaged 5.8 bases on balls per nine innings over his brief career. Hutchison is a control pitcher, not overpowering, and appears to be the most polished of the non-established big leaguers in the group. Nolin, a big lefthander, and top prospects Stroman and Sanchez would have to mesmerize Torontos brass to break camp with the club, which itself will be a tall task. There are voices amongst the decision-makers who caution against putting too much value on Grapefruit League numbers because there are occasions when pitchers are facing what amount to minor league-calibre line-ups. Jenkins, like Nolin, has options remaining and can be sent to the minor leagues without waivers. Stroman and Sanchez arent on the 40-man roster at the moment and can be sent to the minors without burning one of their three option years, at least not right away. Romero appears to have been relegated to afterthought status, a deep valley for the one-time ace, just three years removed from a 15-win season and All-Star appearance. McGowan has interest in starting, but after multiple shoulder surgeries and not having consistently started in six years, its an unlikely scenario. Hell be stretched out this spring, but McGowan is likely destined for the bullpen. Barring an incredible spring performance, it seems one of Rogers, Redmond, Hutchison or Drabek will come away with the final starting spot. Stroman has an outside shot. If the decision is strictly business, itll be Rogers or Redmond starting the season in the rotation. Regardless, most of the kids on the list are bumping their heads on the minor league ceiling and are expected to be contributing to the Blue Jays sooner rather than later. BULLPEN (SEVEN-MAN or EIGHT-MAN?): Guaranteed: Casey Janssen, Steve Delabar, Brett Cecil, Sergio Santos, Aaron Loup and Dustin McGowan. General manager Alex Anthopoulos has to decide on whether to go with a seven-man or eight-man bullpen. Choose the latter and youll have one fewer bench player (three instead of four) at manager John Gibbonss disposal. The eight-man bullpen scenario occurs if neither Rogerrs nor Redmond secures the final rotation job.dddddddddddd The Blue Jays were reminded last year that a club cant have too much pitching and theres a strong probability either would be lost if exposed to waivers. Jeremy Jeffress, a flame-throwing right-hander, who briefly impressed with a 0.87 ERA over 10 1/3 big league innings last season, also has a shot at making the team. He adjusted his arm slot downward late last season and is in the process of successfully treating a juvenile epilepsy diagnosis. Jeffress is out of options and clubs love hard-throwing pitchers. The Jays got Jeffress through waivers at one point last season. There is no guarantee they could do it again. Left-hander Juan Perez, 35, has returned to health after straining his elbow last summer. Hes caught in a numbers game. Meantime, Neil Wagner appears destined for Triple-A Buffalo regardless of performance. He has an option and he, too, is caught in a numbers game. SECOND BASE: Competing: Ryan Goins, Maicer Izturis, Chris Getz (non-roster invitee,) Jonathan Diaz (non-roster invitee,) Munenori Kawasaki (non-roster invitee) and Steve Tolleson (non-roster invitee.) Goins is the incumbent, having concluded last season as the Jays second baseman. Anthopoulos loves Goinss defense, saying last week he believes Goins is the best in Toronto since the days of Orlando Hudson. Goinss biggest challenger is Getz, a former Royal, who has familiarity with both Gibbons (Royals bench coach, 2008-2011) and hitting coach Kevin Seitzer from his days in Kansas City. Getz is a left-handed bat. BENCH: Here is where the Blue Jays thin out considerably, especially if they begin the season with an eight-man bullpen. Backup catcher: Erik Kratz or Josh Thole. Kratz, who strikes an imposing figure at 64", 255 lbs, is a right-handed bat whos hit 18 home runs in 378 at-bats over the last two seasons with the Phillies. Considering the likelihood the second catcher will play more this season (Dioner Navarro hasnt played more than 89 games in a season since 2009,) the Jays could value Kratzs offense over Tholes long history with knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. Navarro wont catch Dickey. Kratz spent a week with Dickey in Nashville in the offseason and has caught all of his bullpen and live batting practice sessions so far this spring. Right-handed Bat to Platoon with Adam Lind: Moises Sierra is out of options and Toronto needs to determine if he is the viable option. Backup Infielder: Manager John Gibbons has said on more than one occasion that he prefers to use Izturis off the bench because he can play around the infield. Its a role Izturis became accustomed to in Anaheim. So, if the Jays go with an eight-man bullpen, thats it. Anthony Gose, under the scenario presented above, would begin the season in Buffalo. Should the Jays go with a seven-man bullpen, the roving outfielder spot opens up and is likely Goses to take with the likes of Kevin Pillar and Kenny Wilson getting more seasoning in the minor leagues. REPLAY Each club will play five games this spring under the new instant replay rules. Managers will be encouraged to throw the challenge flag at some point each game during the exhibition contests. "We had that meeting last week and they said the umpires will notify us before the game and say, hey if you get a chance, try it," said manager John Gibbons. INTRA-SQUAD GAME The Blue Jays played a four-and-a-half inning intra-squad game on Tuesday at the Bobby Mattick Complex. Drew Hutchison, Marcus Stroman and Sean Nolin each pitched a scoreless inning. Aaron Sanchez gave up the games only run, a Maicer Izturis single. It was the fourth and final hit he allowed in his inning of work. ' ' '

The Victoria swimmer had the lead halfway through Sundays final of the womens 200-metre backstroke, only to be passed by two Australian competitors -- including one right at the wall -- in having to settle for bronze. Caldwell finished 1.27 seconds back of Belinda Hocking for first place, but was just 0.04 seconds off Emily Seebohms silver-medal time of two minutes 08.51 seconds. "I knew it was going to be pretty quick. Those Aussie girls are always fast," said Caldwell, who finished in 2:08.55. "Its never great to be out-touched (at the wall) for any medal. I was just off the silver and a little bit off the gold today. Caldwell was fastest in qualifying, and swam even faster in the final, but wasnt able to hold off either Hocking or Seebohm over the final 100 metres in a race that saw Genevieve Cantin of Lac Beauport, Que., finish seventh and Sinead Russell of Burlington, Ont., wind up eighth. "Belinda is always a back-halfer. Shes negative split them before," said Caldwell. "Thats definitely her strong suit, the back end of the race. I struggled a bit with being sick a bit on and off this year so maybe my fitness isnt quite where it needs to be." Still, the 23-year-old collected Canadas fifth medal at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre through four days of competition. Meanwhile, Remi Pelletier-Roy of Longueuil, Que., added another bronze for Canada in the mens 20-kilometre scratch race -- the countrys first of the Games in cycling -- after the 24-year-old finished third behind New Zealands Shane Archbold and Australias Glenn OShea at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. "The track program came here with big goals and I think getting a medal was the very least we were hoping for," said Pelletier-Roy. "Getting to the last race, it was our last chance to do it so Im pretty happy to put that on the board for us as a program and for myself." After four days of competition in Scotland, Canada sits tied for sixth in the overall medal standings with 18 -- seven gold, three silver and eight bronze. Katerine Savard of Pont-Rouge, Que., wasnt able to add to the tally or match her gold-medal winning performance from the womens 100-metre butterfly in the 50-metre fly, finishing sixth with a time of 26.27 seconds. "To be honest Im a little bit disappointed," said the 21-year-old. "I was expecting faster, but I have the 200-metre butterfly (on Monday) so Im going to focus on that." Englands Francesca Halshall was first in 25.20 seconds, followed by Arianna Vanderpool Wallace (25.53) of the Bahamas and Australias Brittany Elmslie (25.91). Montreals Sandrine Mainville was eighth. "The other girls were just faster than me today," added Savard. "Its noot a really good time for me.dddddddddddd A small thing can make a big difference." Staying in the pool, Calgarys Yuri Kisil grabbed a surprising fourth-place finish in the mens 100-metre freestyle behind a trio of Aussies. Kisil qualified for the final with the seventh fastest time, but touched in a personal best 49.27 seconds. Aurelie Rivard of Haut-Richelieu, Que., finished fourth in the womens para-swimming 100-metre breaststroke, followed by Katarina Roxon of St. Johns, N.L., in fifth. Ottawas Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson was fifth in the womens 200-metre individual medley, with 17-year-old Sydney Pickrem, who swims out of St-Jerome, Que., finishing eighth. In the only other final involving Canadians, Calgarys Russell Wood finished seventh in the mens 50-metre backstroke. Meanwhile, Torontos Brittany MacLean advanced to the womens 800-metre freestyle final, while Mainville moved onto to the womens 100-metre freestyle final where she will be joined by fellow Montrealers Victoria Poon and Alyson Ackman. Tera van Beilen of Oakville, Ont., and Kierra Smith of Kelowna, B.C., will swim in final of the womens 100-metre breaststroke, while Torontos Martha McCabe failed to advance. Edmontons Richard Funk qualified for the mens 50-metre breaststroke final, but Vancouvers Coleman Allen, as well as Evan White and Gamal Assaad, both of Oakville, failed to advance in the mens 100-metre butterfly. Elsewhere at the Games, Lanni Marchant, from London, Ont., finished fourth in the womens marathon, completing the two-loop course that wound around Glasgow in two hours 31 minutes 14 seconds. Mohammed Ahmed raced to fifth in the mens 5,000 metres on the first day of track and field. The 23-year-old from St. Catharines, Ont., ran 13 minutes 18.88 seconds -- a personal best and the third fastest time ever by a Canadian. "Fifth, you know, I was really close but I gave everything I had, I just made tactical errors," said Ahmed. "I am a bit disappointed, I really wanted to go out there and be right there with those guys. "But I am a bit closer than I was last year and I have another race coming up on Friday (the 10,000 metres) and another Canadian there with me (Cam Levins) which will make it a little bit easier. So I am just going to go out there and have fun." Notes: Sultana Frizell of Perth, Ont., threw a Commonwealth Games record in qualifying for Monday nights womens hammer throw final. He still found a way to end the New Orleans Pelicans three-game winning streak. Nowitzki scored 11 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and had the last of his season-high four blocked shots on a crucial possession in the final minute as the Mavericks beat the Pelicans 100-97 at the start of a four-game road trip. Nowitzki gave Dallas the lead with a free throw to make the score 98-97 with 32.3 seconds left. He then got a piece of Eric Gordons driving floater, grabbed the rebound and hit two more free throws with 8 seconds left. "It could have gone either way," Nowitzki said. "Finally, we were on the other end one time in execution and getting some stops and getting some big rebounds. It was definitely a good one to get against a very good team." Nowitzki ran off a long list of negatives that could have cost the Mavericks the game. The Pelicans outrebounded them 58-38. He felt he forced some bad shots in the first half when he was double-teamed, connecting on only 2 of 7 instead of finding the open man. He even missed two free throws after hitting an NBA-best 86 of 91 before Wednesday. The Mavericks also messed up their final defensive possession, giving New Orleans forward Ryan Anderson a wide-open look to tie the score. Anderson, who entered as the NBAs second-most-accurate 3-point shooter at 55.6 per cent, missed it with 2 seconds left. "We switched at the end and left him open," Nowitzki said. "I dont know what happened. He had a clean look from the top of the key, which he probably makes eight out of 10, so we really dodged a bullet." Reserve Vince Carter had 15 points for Dallas and Monta Ellis added 14 points, with the other three starters scoring between 10 and 12. Jrue Holiday had a season-high 26 points for the Pelicans, who played without injured forward Anthony Davis for the second consecutive game. Al-Farouq Aminu tied his career high with 20 rebounds and added a season-high 16 points. Anderson finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds. The Mavericks won with balance for three quarters and Nowitzki taking over down the stretch. No play was bigger than his block of Gordon in the lane. He had not blocked more than one shot in any game this year. "Tell them youre a shot blocker now," Carter said jokinglly as Nowitzki talked in the locker room.dddddddddddd "We have a lot of guys doing a lot of things to try to take the pressure off of him so he doesnt feel he has to put up big numbers every quarter," Carter added. "It can wear him down. Now fourth quarter he can do what he does best." The Pelicans, who outscored opponents by 25 points in the second half while going 3-0 on their recently concluded road trip, tried to pull away in the third quarter with an 8-0 run to go up 73-65 late in the quarter. But the Mavericks answered with a 10-2 spurt, getting 3-pointers from Jae Crowder and Carter. Dallas stayed hot at the start of the fourth. Nowitzki scored on a turnaround to give the Mavericks a 79-77 lead, converted a 3-point play on a tough shot and hit a free throw after the Pelicans were called for a defensive 3-second violation as Dallas went ahead 83-77. That lead didnt last long. Holiday sank a 3-pointer to tie the score at 86 with 6:49 left. Nowitzki hit a face-up midrange shot to give Dallas a 97-94 lead before Holiday sank a long 3-pointer to tie the score at 97, setting up Nowitzkis finish. "Its not very often you win on the road getting pounded on the glass by 20 boards," Nowitzki said. "But well definitely take it." Without Davis, New Orleans could not extend its winning streak to four games for the first time since Jan. 5-11 of 2013. In Davis absence, Aminu was more aggressive than usual. Averaging 5.5 points and 5.5 rebounds, he had a double-double by halftime (10 points, 11 rebounds) of his first in a full game this season. He finished the half with a soaring dunk off a nice pass from Holiday and a reverse layup around Nowitzki. "I always grade myself off wins and losses," Aminu said. "It really doesnt matter what I do. Its a disappointing night." NOTES: Davis talked to reporters before the game for the first time since he fractured the fifth metacarpal when he hit his hand on the rim against the New York Knicks on Sunday. "Of course its frustrating," he said. "You want to be on the floor. But at the same time, theres nothing you can do about it." . Calderon started for Dallas after being listed as day to day with a bruised right ankle. . Neither team led by double digits at any time in the game. . New Orleans, which fell to 9-9, has not been two games above .500 since starting 2-0 in 2011-12. ' ' 's after that?" ' ' '
