DETROIT - Dallas Keuchel won this matchup of old college roommates — then admitted he hadnt paid much attention to his friend-turned-adversary on the mound. Keuchel outpitched Drew Smyly, and the Houston Astros beat Detroit 6-2 on Thursday to snap the Tigers eight-game winning streak. Keuchel and Smyly both pitched for the Arkansas team that reached the College World Series in 2009, but on this day, Keuchel had more important concerns than watching his fellow left-hander throw. "I honestly didnt see a single pitch from him," Keuchel said. "I was in the tunnel. It was kind of hot today for Detroit right now, and I was just trying to stay cool as much as possible." Keuchel (3-2) allowed two runs and six hits in 7 2-3 innings, and Houston ended its five-game losing streak. The Astros broke through with three runs in the fifth off Smyly (2-2) to take the lead. Houstons George Springer, a first-round draft pick in 2011, hit his first major league homer. Carlos Corporan and Matt Dominguez also went deep for the Astros. Victor Martinez homered for the Tigers. Smyly allowed only one hit — an infield single — through the first four innings, but his outing took a turn for the worse in the fifth when Springer lined a one-out solo homer over the wall in right. "Its obviously good to hit something hard and to have a great result like that," said Springer, who planned to give the home run ball to his father. "I didnt try to do too much — was able to stay on it and hit it hard, and for me thats a great sign." Jose Altuve put the Astros ahead 3-2 with a two-run double later that inning. Smyly allowed three runs and five hits in 5 1-3 innings. He struck out two and walked three. Corporan homered off reliever Evan Reed in the seventh to make it 4-2. Keuchel struck out seven without a walk, navigating a tough Detroit lineup without too much difficulty. "I wont be talking to him for a while," Smyly joked. "I thought hed do OK, but hes a lefty and with our offence, I thought wed get to him. Hes a very smart pitcher and hes a bulldog, and we couldnt do anything with him. Thats as good as Ive seen him, and you have to tip your hat." Keuchels final big test came in the seventh, when Detroit put men on first and third with two out. Keuchel struck out pinch-hitter Torii Hunter to end the inning. The temperature at game time was 77 degrees, and Keuchel said his decision to ignore Smylys pitching was nothing personal. "On the more humid days, Ill try to go in and keep cool in between innings, so I dont usually watch the other pitcher," he said. "In this case, it was my college roommate, so Im sure hell be mad I didnt see a few pitches." Miguel Cabrera came to the plate in the eighth after Ian Kinslers single chased Keuchel, but the best the Detroit slugger could do against reliever Anthony Bass was a soft grounder to second. Dominguez hit a two-run homer in the ninth. The Tigers opened the scoring in the second on an RBI double by Nick Castellanos. Springer, who came close to preventing a homer by Cabrera the previous night, nearly caught this drive too, but it caromed off the wall in right field. Martinez hit his seventh homer of the year in the fourth. He finished the day with three hits, extending his hitting streak to 11. NOTES: Houston OF L.J. Hoes, who entered the game in an 0-for-20 slump, had three singles and scored a run. ... The Astros play at Baltimore on Friday night, with RHP Scott Feldman (2-1) scheduled to return after missing time with right biceps tendinitis. Baltimore starts LHP Wei-Yin Chen (3-2). ... Detroit hosts Minnesota, with RHP Justin Verlander (4-1) on the mound against Twins RHP Phil Hughes (3-1). Air Jordan Sale . Philippe Desrosiers stopped 42 shots through overtime and three more in the shootout to pick up his third shutout of the season for Rimouski (31-15-7). Zachary Fucale made 28 saves for Halifax (34-17-3) in the loss. Fake Jordan . Off-Season Game Plan looks at a Wild team that has a nice mix of proven veterans along with young, inexpensive talent on the rise. When the Wild signed Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, making a big splash in the summer of 2012, it set the franchise on a path to being more competitive, but a big reason that they have been so competitive is the contributions of young players who still have more to give. https://www.wholesalejordanshoeschina.com/ .A. Happ is coming off his first start of the year, a win at Philadelphia Monday. The former Phillie allowed three hits in five scoreless frames of a 3-0 triumph. Cheap Jordan From China . Pinch-hitter Tommy Medica singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Padres beat the Seattle Mariners 2-1 in their first home game since Gwynn died of cancer Monday. Air Jordan 19 For Sale . The win puts the final playoff berth in Group A in question. If the Czechs beat Slovakia on Tuesday, they will go through. If they lose, Germany will get the last quarter-final berth. So the Los Angeles Angels, the team with the best record in Major League baseball over 162 games, are out of the post-season in three games straight, defeated by a team that won nine fewer games during the regular season and didnt clinch a playoff spot until the final weekend of the season. The Washington Nationals, the team with the best record in the National League this season, are a game away from being knocked out in three games straight by a San Francisco team that won eight fewer games during the regular season and, like Kansas City, qualified via the wild card. But should we really be surprised? The playoffs in baseball are a crapshoot, a combination of who gets hot at the right time, who comes through in the clutch and whose pitching rises to the occasion. And there seems to be no way to predict how and why this happens. But it sure seems as though what wins over the course of 162 games in baseball, when teams are playing with five-man rotations and stretching out their bullpens to last over the course of six months, doesnt translate very well to the post-season. Consider that over the past 34 years of post-season baseball, the team with the best record in the Major Leagues has won the World Series exactly six times, most recently when Boston Red Sox did it one year ago. In fact, last yeaars World Series was a complete anomaly a€“ not just because it featured two teams that tied for the overall best record in baseball over the course of the season but also because it was a rare matchup between the team with the best record in the American League against that with the best record in the National League.dddddddddddd Which almost never happens. It would be easy to blame the fact that the team with the best record in baseball rarely wins the World Series on baseballs expanded playoff pool which has gone from allowing four of 28 teams in the post-season in 1993 to allowing 10 of 30 today. And yet from 1980 to 1993, the team with the best record in baseball won the World Series exactly twice over 14 seasons before baseball decided to expand its playoff pool. Since then, its happened four times over 19 years. Baseball is a sport that measures excellence over six months, during which great teams can look horrible in stretches and bad teams can look like world beaters over the course of a week or two. The point here is not to diminish the significance of winning the World Series, but just to understand what it means; that it is not so much symbolic of being the best team in baseball but more of being the one that can seize the moments and etch itself into a place in history.
