BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Joey Logano is looking more and more like a Sprint Cup title contender. Logano surged past Matt Kenseth with 44 laps to go and won for the first time in his career at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night, foiling the 2003 series champions gambling attempt to secure a spot in NASCARs playoffs. Logano, just 24, became the fifth driver this season to win three times, joining the Hendrick Motorsports trio of Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Penske Racing teammate Brad Keselowski, who finished second. Is there a message in that heading into the Chase for the championship in two weeks? "That we can win the thing," Logano said. Logano had never won more than one race in a season before this year, and has doubled his career victory total. He also added a cherished notch by winning at Bristol, which bills itself as the worlds fastest half-mile. "I feel like the Bristol night race is maybe the third or fourth biggest race of the year," he said. "Just the atmosphere before the race, if it doesnt pump you up, nothing does. Its just the baddest mamma jamma race track ever built." He gained the top spot when Kenseth elected to stay on the track when most of the field pitted after a caution flag with 67 laps to go, picking track position and fresh air over new tires. It seemed like a strategy that could work, especially if he could stay in the high groove that gave drivers decidedly more speed off the corners all weekend on the 0.533-mile oval. But the Penske Racing teammates quickly proved it faulty. "I just knew that clean air was going to be worth more than new tires," Kenseth said of his decision after finishing third. He said he also felt his car wasnt as strong as he liked on fresh tires, and first Logano and then Keselowski foiled his plan. "They cleared everybody way too fast," Kenseth said. He still remains in great position to make the playoffs, standing fifth in the points race and first among non-winners. His lead is now 90 points over 17th place Kasey Kahne, who has only two races left to overtake him before the field is set. Keselowski never made a serious bid to overtake Logano, though he did pull up to his bumper on the last lap. "When Id get right behind him, Id get in the dirty air and it just pushed too much be able to do anything," he said. "The last lap I just dive-bombed it in there on a prayer and kind of hoping it would stick or he would slip of something would happen for me, and made it look cool. But it really wasnt that close." It did, however, give Penske a sweep of the weekend, its first since 2006. Ryan Blaney won the Nationwide race on Friday night, and along with the 1-2 finish, Will Power won the pole in Sonoma in IndyCar on Saturday. Keselowski also won the truck race Thursday, giving Ford its first sweep of NASCARs top three series since 2006. Jimmie Johnson, slowed early by two pit road speeding penalties, rallied to finish fourth, his best result since mid-June at Michigan, and Kurt Busch was fifth, rallying on a call by crew chief Daniel Knost with 130 to go after almost being lapped. Gordon remained the points leader despite a 16th-place run. Hes 27 clear of Earnhardt and 42 ahead of Keselowski. With 100 to go, it looked possible the series might get a 13th winner of the year. Jamie McMurray, who led a race-best 148 laps, was leading, followed by Kenseth, and Ryan Newman was ninth. As the final laps clicked off, though, McMurray faded to eighth and Newman, once as high as seventh, dropped to 13th. Kahne, another driver desperate for a victory or a surge in the point standings, led the race for 40 laps, almost to the halfway point. He then pitted under green with a loose wheel and went two laps down. He wound up 35th. It was another rough night for Aric Almirola, who has had six of those in a row since his first career victory at Daytona made him one of the unlikeliest drivers to secure a spot in the upcoming Chase. Almirola, who started 42nd after crashing in qualifying, completed just 37 laps before crashing. "What an amazing race car these guys brought me -- two of them -- and to go out like that is certainly disappointing. But thats racing at Bristol," he said. "You get caught up in other peoples wrecks." Alcides Escobar Jersey . The Philadelphia Eagles acquired running back Darren Sproles from the New Orleans Saints for a fifth-round draft pick on Tuesday. Only those involved will know for sure, but something really got under the skin of the home side, beyond just the referees decision. It was the second time this season the Whitecaps held Real Salt Lake to a single point at their fortress in the Utah mountains. In the April encounter, remarkably late goals by Nicholas Mezquida and Sebastian Fernandez overturned an early two-goal RSL advantage, leaving the MLS Cup-finalists strewn about the pitch, flat-out in disbelief. An obviously frustrated Kyle Beckerman was overheard telling Mattocks, “Good luck making the playoffs.” I wondered if the prospects of taking only one of a possible six points at home against a cocky group of 20-somethings was too much to bear for last years Western champs. Perhaps, thats why the pot finally boiled over and, not long after, Joao Plata made sure RSL got something from the game. Robbie Findley came within inches of winning it. Still, taking just two of six points against the Whitecaps at home would be considered a setback by the veteran team, one that has never lost to Vancouver at Rio Tinto Stadium. Maybe the frustration was amplified by the fact that Vancouver had played in Toronto on Wednesday and rotated their squad with a mix of players who hadnt seen starting minutes in quite some time. “Squad guys, stepping in and understanding their roles and the system almost immediately? Who do they think they are? Us!?” The Claret and Cobalts have been a model franchise since joining MLS in 2005. They hired a young coach and former MLS vet in Jason Kreis, who envisioned and executed a style of play that would become the clubs DNA. Generall Manager Garth Lagerway made prudent, but meaningful, signings without blowing the bank on high-profile foreigners.dddddddddddd Avaro Saborio, Javier Morales, Kyle Beckerman, Nat Borchers, Will Johnson, Jaimeson Olave and Nick Rimando - an enviable foundation that was then augmented by role players who fit Kreiss system. Lagerway also wasnt afraid to move players on as they reached peak value. He freed up roughly $1 million of cap space prior to last season by shipping out Johnson, Olave and Espindola. RSL came within a penalty shootout of putting a second star on their badge last December. Carl Robinsons club-building philosophy isnt drastically different from RSLs. Hes referenced their formula often and the grand vision includes locking down his young core long term. That group includes Koffie, Tiebert, Laba, Leveron, Mattocks, Manneh and Hurtado. Despite their youth, the MLS minutes among them are starting to accumulate and, when this season concludes, roughly $1 million of expiring contracts could come off the books. Supporters can be excused for wanting success now, but if the Whitecaps could have the kind of long-term prosperity that Salt Lake has enjoyed, a team that is perpetually in the championship discussion, well, fans would be almost certainly be willing to wait a bit longer. RSL went from expansion team to MLS Cup-winner in only four years. After some early hiccups, the Whitecaps, now in their fourth MLS season, seem to have found their young visionary. If he sees out his plan, perhaps, one day they, too, will be desperately disappointed by collecting a mere two out of six points at home from a Western rival. So when an agitated Javier Morales got in the face of countryman Mattias Laba in Saturdays midfield dust-up, was he looking at a younger version of himself? Carl Robinson sure hopes so. ' ' '
