UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The New York Islanders were seeking a positive finish to a frustrating season on home ice. Ottawas Jason Spezza and Craig Anderson did their best to block that effort. Spezza scored twice and Anderson made 45 saves as the Senators topped the Islanders 4-1 on Tuesday night. The Senators (34-31-14) will still miss the post-season for the first time since 2011 and just the third time since 1996. They were making their first appearance this season at Nassau Coliseum, and the Islanders won the previous two meetings in Ottawa. "It feels good to put together a team effort and come away with the win," Anderson said. "We played well." Matt Kassian scored an empty-net goal at 19:48, his first this season. Spezza, the Senators captain, had the chance for a hat trick, but instead passed to Kassian. Frans Nielsen scored the lone goal for the Islanders with his career-best 25th in the teams home finale. Anders Nilsson made 28 saves for the Islanders (31-37-11), who wont reach the playoffs for the sixth time in seven years. They finished 13-19-9 at home. "The effort has been there and will continue to be there," Islanders defenceman Travis Hamonic said. "Were going to keep pushing and playing hard until the end." Spezza opened the scoring on a tip-in at 12:45 of the second. Nielsen then tied it 22 seconds into the third. Rookie defenceman Kevin Czuczman and Josh Bailey had assists, giving Bailey points in six straight games. Spezzas go-ahead goal at 12:45 of the third came when his shot edged under crossbar behind Nilsson. Ales Hemsky, who assisted on both of Spezzas goals, added his 13th at 14:26 of the third to make it 3-1. The Islanders qualified for the post-season last year for the first time since 2007 and lost to the top-seeded Pittsburgh Penguins in a tough six-game opening-round series. But they never found firm footing this season after trading captain John Tavares longtime linemate Matt Moulson to Buffalo for Thomas Vanek on Oct. 27. They subsequently traded Vanek to Montreal at the March 5 deadline. The Islanders also had to contend with a litany of injuries to key players, particularly veteran defenceman Lubomir Visnovsky, who missed most of the season with a concussion and starting goaltender Evgeni Nabokov. Then, Tavares suffered a season-ending knee injury during the Winter Olympics in February. The Islanders have dressed at least nine rookies in their last nine games in which theyve gone 5-2-2. They are 7-4-2 in their last 13 contests. There are 11 rookies on the current roster: Defencemen Calvin de Haan, Scott Mayfield, Matt Donovan and Czuczman in addition to forwards Brock Nelson, Brett Gallant, Mike Halmo, Anders Lee, John Persson and Ryan Strome plus Nilsson. All but an injured de Haan played against the Senators. "Im proud of the young guys, they are playing hard," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "When we get our team back next year and play the way we can play, I think we can make a push and get back to the dance." Gallant, 25, made his NHL debut. He had 245 penalty minutes in 56 games for Bridgeport of the AHL. The feisty forward levelled Kassian with a single punch midway through the first period. "He caught me with one," said Kassian, sporting a postgame bruise under his right eye. "Sometimes that happens in a fight, you get punched right in the face." The Islanders conclude their season with road games at Montreal, New Jersey and Buffalo. Ottawa hosts New Jersey and Toronto before finishing at Pittsburgh. NOTES: Islanders forward Cal Clutterbuck left during the first period with an upper-body injury and didnt return. ... Ottawa was without defencemen Colin Greening and Jared Cowen with lower-body injuries, plus forward Bobby Ryan (sports hernia). ... Defenceman Thomas Hickey is the only Islander to play all 79 games this season. ... The Islanders are 25-10-4 when they score at least three goals and 6-27-7 when they do not. Nike Zoom Sverige . There are question marks about Djokovic because he hasnt played that level in recent months, but thats not going to last. After the judge left the courtroom, Pistorius stood sobbing with his body trembling and turned away from the gallery. Nel also tried to pin Pistorius on whether he intended to shoot at the intruder, but Pistorius said he did not intend to do so and that he was terrified at the time. "I didnt have time to think about what I wanted to do," Pistorius said. That prompted Nel to question whether Pistorius was changing his legal strategy from "self-defence" to "involuntary action" and he later said Pistorius did not fire a warning shot. Pistorius said that when he shot he had no idea who was behind the door, in response to Nels remark that he didnt know whether a child, an unarmed burglar or more than one person could have been in the toilet. "You never gave them a chance, in your version," Nel said, building the prosecution case that Pistorius shot to kill. Pistorius was also accused of tailoring his version to fit evidence at the scene, with Nel painstakingly listing alleged inconsistencies in the account and alleging that Pistorius had "concocted" his version of the shooting. "Youre tailoring your version as youre sitting there," Nel said. He accused Pistorius of being a stickler for detail on some matters, in contrast to his frequent statements on the witness stand that he could not remember aspects of his testimony. Nel noted that Pistorius earlier said he warned Steenkamp to call police about an intruder in a whisper, contradicting later testimony that he spoke in a "low tone" and the prosecutor also said blood spatter evidence indicated that the athletes statement about the location of a duvet in the bedroom was false. Pistorius has said the duvet was on the bed, and that police photographs of the bed cover on the floor suggest that police moved it there after the shooting. Nel said a pattern of blood drops on the duvet and on the carpet nearby show that it was on the floor before police arrived, and that its location amounts to evidence that the couple had been having an argument. Meanwhile, eighth-seeded Frenchman Adrian Mannarino handled Taiwans Jimmy Wang 6-2, 6-4. Additional first-round wins came for Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky, Croat Ante Pavic and Aussie Luke Saville. Heath Slocum and Scott Langley share the lead at 10-under 130 through two rounds of the PGA Tours final event before the playoffs. Thirteen other players were two strokes or fewer back, including four -- Brian Stuard, Nick Watney, Martin Laird and Andrew Svoboda -- who were at 9 under. Local favourite Carl Pettersson -- the 2008 winner here who is one of nine players two strokes back -- offered some advice for those playing the course where he serves as a member of the board. "Youve got to keep your foot on the gas," he said. Since the tournament returned to Sedgefield Country Club in 2008, every two-day leader until now had been at 11 under or better. In what has become an annual rite of mid-August, the field is littered with players trying to prolong their seasons for at least one more week by cracking the top 125 on the points list and qualifying for the first round of the playoffs, which begin next week at The Barclays in New Jersey. Langley isnt one of them. The second-year pros main concern is chasing his first PGA Tour victory. He isnt feeling quite as much stress as he did here last year, when he missed the cut yet squeaked into The Barclays at No. 124. "Last year, so much going through my head as a rookie, not knowing how to handle it," Langley said. "I was thinking a little too much about things that I really have no control over in terms of keeping my card, what other guys are doing. Lesson learned." Langley ran off three straight birdies early in his 65 and closed with two in a row after putting both of his approach shots less than 6 feet from the stick. At NNo.dddddddddddd. 81 on the points list, his spot next week is safe. Slocums isnt. He is at No. 158 but is well aware that if you can get into the playoffs, anything can happen. Five years ago, he made the playoffs "by the skin of my teeth" at No. 124 -- and then went on to win The Barclays. "I came into this week trying to create a little bit of momentum for me to whether I could somehow get myself into the playoffs or the (Web.com) finals," Slocum said. Slocum had seven birdies during his 65 and moved atop the leaderboard after a run of four in a row late during his second consecutive 65. He sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the 13th before twice sticking approach shots within seven feet of the flagstick and converting those short putts. "It was a good stretch, and obviously at this point, youre going to need a lot," Slocum said. "Youre going to have some of that to keep yourself in contention and go for it." Indeed, that put him in position to challenge for his fifth PGA Tour victory and first since the McGladrey Classic in 2010. "I do miss this feeling of being in contention," Slocum said. "Not being in contention for a while, Im going to savour it." Svoboda briefly joined them at 10 under with a birdie on the 17th, but slipped back after missing a 20-foot par putt on the 18th and closing his 64 with a bogey. Among those bubble players who came to Sedgefield hoping to play their way into the post-season, No. 125 Paul Casey shot a 69 to move to 6 under and put himself well past the cut line of 2 under. Others ran into bubble trouble: No. 122 Robert Allenby, No. 127 Charlie Beljan and No. 128 Greg Chalmers were among the borderline players who missed the cut ' ' '
