TSNs Jack Armstrong starts the week with five quick thoughts on the injury to the season-ending injury to the Pistons Brandon Jennings, the maturation of OJ Mayo of the Bucks, Iman Shumperts potential with the Cavs, Quincy Pondexters new role with the Grizzlies and the emergence of the T-Wolves Gorgui Dieng. FIVE QUICK NBA THOUGHTS: 1. BRANDON JENNINGS (Pistons): Im bummed out for the young man. Hes been awesome for the past four or five weeks and now, playing the best ball of his career, a freak accident leads to him tearing his Achilles. In my opinion, the Pistons would have ended up as the eighth seed in the East if he stayed healthy. Now, thats doubtful. Theres going to be lots of pressure now on DJ Augustin to produce nightly. Hes a good player, but its a lot to ask in filling in for Jennings, a guy so pivotal to their success. Its a real shame. 2. OJ MAYO (Bucks): Mayos numbers are respectable (11.3 PPG and 2.9 APG), yet I look beyond them and like even more of what I see. Hes playing with energy, really competing defensively and slowing down and trying to be a better teammate. Coach Jason Kidd is getting him to mature and buy in. I like his game right now. 3. IMAN SHUMPERT (Cavs): His offence might be a bit inconsistent, but his athleticism and perimeter defensive ability grade high in my books. If Shumpert stays within himself on the offensive end and concentrates on being a defensive stopper, hell be an impact defender for the Cavs. And you gotta have those guys. Ask Memphis with Tony Allen - they can really help you in a perimeter-dominated league. I love the three pick-ups (Shumpert, JR Smith and Timofey Mozgov) by general manager David Griffin. 4. QUINCY PONDEXTER (Pelicans): He had 14 and five last night in a big win over the Mavs. Pondexter is a sold pick-up from the Grizzlies and New Orleans might be a nice spot for him. Hell get the minutes he needs to get comfortable and hes a solid two-way player. It was a subtle move to acquire him, yet I like how he might fit here. 5. GORGUI DIENG (Timberwolves): I loved him in college at Rick Pitinos Louisville. This guy gets after it and takes no prisoners. Diengs having a solid year averaging 9.9 PPG and 8.3 RPG. Hes a very good shot-blocker and team defender. He and Andrew Wiggins are the young, bright spots for the T-Wolves and Dieng is certainly a keeper. So its no surprise with the safety position opposite standout Harrison Smith up for grabs, Zimmer is bringing back old reliable one more time. Crocker signed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings on Monday, giving Zimmer some much-needed insurance on the unproven back end of his defence. Each of the previous two seasons, as defensive co-ordinator in Cincinnati, Zimmer talked Crocker out of retiring to play for the Bengals. Zimmer also brought Crocker with him when he moved from defensive co-ordinator of the Atlanta Falcons to the Bengals in 2008. Now that Zimmer is in his first season as a head coach with the Vikings, Crocker is again coming back to help him out. "I never retired," said Crocker, who had 37 tackles and two interceptions in 12 games last year. "You always are kind of ready. Especially when you know you got a guy like Zimmer that you can play for. You know we have rapport and we talk often and in this part in my career I wouldnt want to go (with) anyone else. Im not starting over, I wannted to play for a guy who has meant a lot for my career and Ive given him everything that I have.dddddddddddd Just empty the gas tank and see where it goes." The position opposite Smith has been in flux since Zimmer took over. Robert Blanton appeared to be in line to be the starter but injured his hamstring during training camp and will likely miss several weeks. Jamarca Sanford missed much of the spring with injury and has yet to impress in training camp. Mistral Raymond has been equally unimpressive to this point and Andrew Sendejo was just activated from the physically unable to perform list on Monday. "Ive given everything I have to him," the 34-year-old Crocker said of Zimmer. "I think Ive been accountable. Thats the biggest thing that Ive not only been accountable, but Ive been a playmaker for him and thats all he can ask for in a player. "From a coaching standpoint hes just so honest and you can really appreciate that the guy is going to tell you whether youre good or whether youre bad, but at the end of the day youre going to know where you stand. Ive always played at the highest level playing for a guy like that." ' ' '
