Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of catcher Jordan Guida and right-handed pitcher Christian Garcia to contracts for the 2014 season. Guida, 25, saw limited action in 42 games with the Goldeyes last season. He hit .184 in 38 at-bats and registered an RBI. He didnt register enough at-bats to accumulate a year of service, so he remains a first-year rookie in the American Association. “Hes a really good rookie,” Forney said. “Unfortunately the way our roster evolved last year, we didnt get him nearly enough playing time as I would have liked. He has the ability to be a really good catcher. He has good hands, a really strong throwing arm, good feet behind the plate and really does a good job of calling games. Offensively, I think he has a lot of pop and some extra-base hit potential. We look forward to see him in camp again this year.” Guida was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Detroit Tigers in 2012 and played the second half of that season in their system. Garcia, 22, played most of last season in the Houston Astros organization at the Rookie level with Greeneville of the Appalachian League. He went 2-1 with a 5.85 ERA in 16 appearances with Greeneville and had two scoreless appearances with Class A Short Season Tri-City of the New York/Penn League. “He came highly recommended from an agent,” Forney said. “He has a powerful arm, anywhere from 91-94 MPH. Were looking for some younger guys to help fill out our pitching staff. Were hopeful he can come in and solidify a spot on the team. He can start and relieve. Well get a good look at him in training camp and determine where he fits best on our roster.” A 29th round selection by the Astros in the 2012 MLB amateur draft, Garcia played the last two seasons in their system at the Rookie and Class A Short Season levels. Winnipeg has also released pitchers Mark Hardy and Patrick Keating, who have retired from professional baseball. Patriots attorney Andrew Phelan said at a hearing in Fall River Superior Court the team has agreed to produce 317 pages of materials sought by the defence, including medical and training records. But the team objects to turning over nine pages of scouting reports, which Phelan said contain proprietary "trade secrets." He also said they are irrelevant. Phelan said the Patriots have offered Hernandezs lawyers the option of reviewing -- but not copying -- what he described as a 1 1/2 page summary of the psychological assessment. Thats all the team has, according to court filings. The team says the defence should seek to obtain the full report from the third party that produced it, which specializes in providing character and mental assessments for professional sports organizations. Phelan accused the defence of being on a "fishing expedition." Hernandez, 24, has pleaded not guilty to murder in the June 2013 shooting death of Odin Lloyd, a former semi-professional football player from Boston who was dating the sister of Hernandezs fiancee. Lloyds bullet-riddled body was found in an industrial area not far from the ex-players Massachusetts home. Prosecutors say Hernandez orchestrated the killing because he was upset with Lloyd for talking to some people with whom Hernandez had problems at a nightclub a few days earlier. Hernandezs attorneyss last month asked a judge to approve a subpoena to compel his former employer to turn over all the records in his personnel file, saying they may contain important information about his state of mind.dddddddddddd "State of mind is critical," defence attorney Michael Fee told a judge Wednesday. Hernandez has agreed to the files release. He was released by the Patriots on the day of his arrest last summer. The judge did not hear arguments on the merits of the subpoena request but set a hearing for July 22. Hernandez attended Wednesdays proceeding but did not address the court. Afterward, he was transferred to a new jail in Boston after his attorneys earlier request for a move -- to be closer to them -- was approved. Suffolk County Sheriff Steven W. Tompkins said Hernandez, who is being held without bail, will be treated like any other inmate.
